I have been fighting to make a good fast 32 bit machine from these components:
MB: DFI LanParty ultra 400 NFII
CPU: AMD AThlon XP2500+
Memory: Mushkin 512 Mbyte PC Matched X2 2700 level II CAS 2 2 2 6
Video card: ATI 9600 Pro
HD: WD 80 Gig *Meg buffer 7200 rpm

After many tries this system always breaks down when I try to use the bios genie to force a faster rate. I don't think DFI has a good bios for my combination of parts. If I try to change the multiplier the cpu ignores the setting. So I have to use only the fsb to get there. I tried using memory timings like 2 2 2 11 and many other combinations to make it tolerant but none work. The system locks up when I try to use Si Soft Sandra's burn-in tool. I replaced the cooling on the cpu but that hasn't worked either. I also downloaded all later versions of the bios that came out after the one supplied with my board and all locked up even sooner. I'm not sure DFI even has a Bios that works with the NF II chipset. I don't think this is a job for amatuers even tho I have assembled at least 10 systems over the last 15 years. There, now I feel better. I look forward to any comments.

you ARE trying to run PC2700 ram at high speeds at TIGHT settings..


try 2.5(3?) 3 3 8, at FSB 210, which is a good overclock for them..

 
yeah 2-2-2 is way too tight. try 3-3-3 and that should free up some FSB. unlike K8's, K7's take a performance hit when not running 1:1 with memory. so having pc2700 is holding you back in that regard. it's very unlikely that your DDR333 can keep up 1:1 with your 400FSB CPU.
 
...okay. I looked at the date on this post and its current, but man. That set up is from early '04, why didn't you go with 754 sempron and like a 6600gt or 9800pro?

For why it won't OC, its def. your ram. Loosen up the timings to 3-3-3-8, up vdimm a bit and it should go higher.
 
I'm pretty sure he won't be running that chip with a 400MHz FSB, as far as I know the only AXP's with a 400MHz FSB were the 3000+ and 3200+. I know the XP-M can hit FSB's above 400MHz, but don't know much about the regular 2500+'s, i thought they had a 333MHz FSB, which I assume is what he's running it at and trying to o/c from.

Definitely loosen the timings though, it should let you raise the FSB a little higher.
