I don't avoid these less-than-healthy foods entirely, as a salad without dressing is kind of boring, but when I do use them, I use them sparingly.


You all need to educate yourselves. Fat is almost as good as carbs at fueling your body while protein helps you build muscle. You need to take in more calories than you consume in order to gain mass, and fat is the most efficient way to get those calories, as it contains 9 calories per gram. Without some significant amount of fat (unsaturated) calories, it is almost impossible to gait weight.

There's a difference between gaining muscle mass and gaining fat, which is what some people in this thread are talking about. My point is that eating calories to gain fat weight is useless, and eating a high protein diet will absolutely ensure that you're getting a significant amount of fat to burn as well without eating foods that are primarily fat.

Dietary cholesterol has very little impact on your blood's cholesterol.

Where most people get excess cholesterol is by eating too many processed carbs. You're liver then manufactures cholesterol.

Calories is just a #. It's one of several components. You need to understand that the calories from nuts are slowly released into your body and they are completely fine.

Eating fat doesn not make you fat. The monosaturated omega6 and omega 3 fats from nuts are extremely good for you. They increase brain and cardiovascular health. Strengthen cell membranes to protect you from disease and aging. It is released slowly into your body, and generally won't make you fat. You'll feel full longer after eating nuts.

Cholesterol and body fat comes primarily from processed carbohydrates. I'm not advocating Atkin's diet here. I'm saying that carbs from white flour, sugar, etc are extremely unhealthy for you. They create body fat, increase cholesterol and make you hungry all the time.

You want to get your carbs from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Eating healthy fats in moderation won't make you fat. In fact, your body requires them.

Yeah, and just about everyone in America has an extreme deficit of omega 3 fats. I think it's why we have all of these brain function disorders (ADD, allergies, depression, etc).

If you look up DHA, a type of omega 3 fat, you'll find that research is already showing that consuming it during pregnancy decreases the risk of allergies and ADD in babies, and depression for the mothers. DHA is in breast milk. It's not in cow's milk because cows don't need the mental growth that DHA can provide.

Go eat some walnuts, they're good for you.

Now to the OP, I'm trying to understand what your goal is.

Muscle gain, fat gain or both?

If you're trying to gain muscle, just eat plenty of lean meats, nuts and whey protein. But still eat veg, fruits and whole grains because you're body needs it all.

If you're trying to gain fat in a healthy way, I'd guess binge eat fruits like grapes.

I guess I didn't make my point well enough.

I never said that eating fat made you fat. I was talking about gaining muscle, not about the benefits of different fats, which is good information I didn't know anyway. I was trying to give advice on what to eat to gain muscle, to counteract those who came into this thread talking about wanting to gain 10 pounds of fat before starting working out again, and those who believe there are no healthy snacks. I believe I'm the only one in this thread who advocated eating fruits and vegetables as part of a bulking diet.

Just trying to help, but I think what I said got lost in translation.

I eat babies. You could try natural pb or flax seed oil. That's like 210 calories for 2TBSP of pb and 130 for 1TBSP flax. Oatmeal is pretty good too. It microwaves really fast.

Well for us men I don't think there's any pratical purpose of > 5-10% body fat. Unless you're in some sort of cold climate without food or something.

To achieve or maintain 5-10% bodyfat, you'll need to consume a lot of dietary fat.
