Add sound effects & dramatic music?

Lighting effects?

It's not like you could have a pretty girl pop out of there.

You might have something here.... so you means use like dirt t build it with a hose going to the bottem, stick food-colored cake batter inside the crater for the compressor hose and oreos on the sides?

If its not your compressor then put the cake batter directly into the air tank. At the very least the blown motor/circuit breaker should get you a few minutes of no learning.

it's mine, so i'd rather not...

how much of a mess are you allowed to make??? can the explosion be pretty violent? ie. spewing lava several feeet from the model?

Nah, you best get to the technical thread to help with your high school project.
Personally, I really like the air compressor idea.

I'm sure a rectalclastic explosion is not going to earn the upper ranks of any popularity contest unless interested members are into really kinky disgusting things. ;)

Even though the (real) explosions involve matter moving at great speed it's also of scale. Think of the airliner streaking across the sky at 550 mph. Looks slow on the ground.

The model should look slow too. 5500 meter/sec propellant is going to go off like a gorilla with flatulence.

well - i think the air compressor is the perfect resource, youv'e got to take advantage of it...

here is what i'd do - start with a cardboard cylender - maybe 4-8 inches in diamter - and build you're volcano around that using whatever you want. foam, cake, anything... -- i guuess really it all depends on how big you want to go.

my next thought it to use hook your air compressor up to a balloon... place the balloon in the base of the cylinder and fill the cylinder up 2/3 with your lava material... i liked the red cake batter idea.... maybe sprinkle you're volcano structure material over the lava to hide it...

then --- start pumping air into the balloon -- it will push the lava up and over the top of the cylinder and down the edges of the volcano -- and then once critical mass of the balloon is reached - BOOM -- lava goes everywhere and the top half of your valcano (depending on what you make it out of) could get blown off... You might even put some sharp pins or needles inside the cardboard tube to make sure you get the pop when you want it.

that's my initial thought...

My brother did one with black powder in a baked clay volcano. It was pretty impressive, so I hear; the teacher got stopped at an airport a few weeks later because a dog smelled the powder residue on her coat. :p

I did this in seventh grade chemistry class from a recipe from the book. It took forever to ignite, but when it did flames shot out to the ceiling and it filled the room up with so much smoke you couldn't see 5 feet in front of you. Ahhh, memories.

That IS a nice one, but it would be more appropriate for undersea vents or pillow lava.

How about a super high-temperature furnace that actually melts rock, then pressurizes it to shoot out the top?
