I need to light the pilot on my furnace...

We have an old Sears model 600 furnace. The pilot went out and I can't seem to find where to light it. I found the switch and turned it to pilot but I can't find where I am supposed to light the darn thing at.

Any help?

that silver tube in pic 3 should be the gas line to the pilot and the copper wire next to it should be the thermocouple, but it's hard to tell with the blurry pic

What made you think that you need a new pilot?

Does the fan/blower run, but the pilot doesn't stay on when lit?

Are all gas valves turn on?

It could be that you have failed limit switch (could be a short), check fuse if the system have on. Reset limit switch if it is a resetable type, or replace if it is a one shot type.

Check the voltage across the limit switch; on energize @ 0V, 24V 0r 120V could mean that you have a bad limit switch.

Check thermostat anticipator to make sure that it didn't fail (burn out).

Check the voltage across the valve therminals to make sure that it is getting power.

Can't do a valve nor thermocouple check since you don't have the adaptor to check the mV of thermocouple when it is energize (close circuit).


1. Clean the combustion chamber

2. Replace the thermocouple (it look like a thermocouple instead of a thermopile). The 3/16 aluminium colour tube/pipe from the gas valve controler is the thermocouple. Replace it with a thermocouple that is 3' or shorter in lenght.

PS. Shut gas off till you get it fix if it isn't already shut off.

Umm...I thought it was the pilot because the pilot wasn't lit.

Remember to hold in the pilot button for a good minute to get the thermocouple hot so it doesn't shut off.

Umm...I thought it was the pilot because the pilot wasn't lit.

Did you check the gas valves to make sure that they are all on?

Turn gas knob to pilot, and hold it down (could take up to 2 minutes) to allow gas flow to the pilot for lighting.

I propped a piece of wood up to hold the switch in while I did some laundry. That worked like a champ!

Has the furnace ran this year?

If the furnace pilot went out by itself:

It could be that the thermocouple is getting old or the valve spring is failing.

Get a thermocouple adaptor for close circuit test of thermocouple. It should read 10-15 mV, and replace if less than 10 mV.
