I got that fart pipe sound for free as the muffler on my Jetta is 9 years old. It's a very endearing sound, though, kind of like a puppy growling as all 110hp or whatever kick in. :p

I have an aftermarket exhaust. But its one the quietest ones you can find for my car. Its just as quiet as stock when driving normally. But growls under WOT. I like it

Its called you got a hole in it. A stock civic exhuast is dead quiet.

I've got a nice exhuast on my Accord, has a deep rumble at idle and opens up nicely up top. Honestly, from inside the car the intake drowns it out:p Its never been described as rice, however.

loud intakes are worse imho. but hey, to each his own yes?

Well, its by default. Pretty much any intake other then stock is going to be loud. But the stock one was choking the engine.

The way I see it, there's nothing wrong with modifying your car for performance, and different engines (# cylinders, cylinder placement and firing order, displacement) just have a different sound. But, I do have a bit of a problem with an otherwise stock engine sporting a massive fartpipe and sounding horrible. Having the sound just for the sake of the sound is silly.

The muscle car can beat a kid on a skateboard at a red light.

they want power and exhuast is the easiest way to gain up to 50 hp on any car...

blame japan for making the motors sound like that...

glad I grew up when Japanese cars were a joke for the street scene.. I miss the good old V8 sound..

MOST of the time thats true, but not when it comes to an STi or SRT-4...

I have a problem with the whole import "scene". It has become a poserfest, with people trying to emulate the "performance look" without actually actually adding performance.

You see this ricer with ridiculous stickers all over the car. He has a loud intake and a loud exhaust. The look and sound of the car scream, "look at me, I'm a poser". The only thing missing is the actual performance. After all, it is an econobox that wasn't built for performance.

I drive a Nissan, and all my mods are subtle but effective. I go for the actual performance without going for the "look" like a poser does. My car is very quiet because the turbos muffle the intake and exhaust pulses.

LOL, Yesterday I saw a Cavalier with one of those mufflers that have two exhaust tips coming out of it. It was around midnight and my lights were shining right into the muffler. One of the tips was completely clean and you could see that it was just a tip welded onto the muffler. :)

Brands like HKS, Greddy..ect are relatively quiet at normal acceleration but still manages to give a deep sound at WOT. Problem is, these systems are pricey...$500 and up for a nice one.

It's those cheap universal mufflers you can get a Kragen or Pepboys that sound like a fart can. It's these that most people can afford. It's these that give the reputable brands a bad image.

Well, in all fairness, the N1 mufflers turbo guys like are pretty damn loud. I have a Tanabe on my Accord and love it. Not sure what to get for the suby.....not many choices yet.

There is an intern a few cubes away who has an older Saturn SC coupe and he has the badges all scraped off and LORD knows what other crappy mods.

The only thing non-stock I have is subs. If I was going to put ANY money into my car, it would be inside-out modifications and not 2" ground clearance plastic bumpers and LED windshield squirters.

That is the one thing I do have that could be considered ricy. I got them so when I get larger turbos the stock recirculation valves won't be overpowered. I also got them to scare people since they sound like truck airbrakes.

they're just as bad as the guys with their bikes who think louder is better, and guys with big slow ass trucks that think a catback is the coolest thing on this planet

The funny thing is that these idiot ricers with huge exhaust are actually loosing performance by putting such a large exhaust on an NA car.

BTW I have a 4 Cylinder Subaru Impreza. This H4 boxer engine can sound pretty mean :)

I still like putting a cherry bomb exaust on an old 60s muslce car (full length/regular size exuast otherwise) with nice headers. That sound is awesome.
