We just upgreaded a PC and I need some sort of software that can import all of my old settings and apps from the Old PC to the New PC. I know this software exists, so what works best and what is open source or free?

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > File and Settings Transfer Wizard

Thanks, but I forgot to mention that the other computer is in Michigan and it's hard drive is here in Florida. Microsofts File and Settings Transfer Wizzard requires that you have both computers booted and running Windows XP. I will not work with my configuration since I have the old Windows hdd installed in the new computer. Drive to drive transfers are vorboten with this wizzard.

Are there any other recomendations?

It needs to be free or open source. Norton is not free. I want to keep my software legit. Also the new pc has some things saved on it. I need to preserve the existing instalation, I have used ghost once but It was to clone. Will Ghost copy just the registry settings, programs, and files (photos) to the new pc with out Damage to the exisiting instalation?

Sourceforge.org is not the easiest site to navagate.

Ghost pretty much just clones. I think some of the REALLY older floppy versions are ok to download free now. Now with ghost its like you periodically backup and everything... overly complicated for what its design intentions were

I hate symantec. They buy up all the good software companies like Sygate, Powerquest, and others I have forgotten. They then turn that software in to Norton Bloatware that slows down the fastest of processors and eats memory like Kirstie Allie at an all you can eat M&M buffet.

It's just a shame, too bad Symantec bought out Powerquest they had software that did this. (I know it was not free but, the thought of norton gets me GRRRR!)

u could download System Mechanic 6 pro and "try it" for 30 days. it has a software migration feature and is a good suite overall.

If you can point me in this direction, I'd be glad. A freeware utility that would let me install XP once, save the installed files, and then refresh it to base level whenever I want on whichever of my drives I want would be great.

Ive managed this once with the help of a 3 HD system. Booted on main then copied the Files from 2nd to 3rd. I formated them both first using Disk Management and assigned the newer hard drive the C:\ that I had preserved when I loaded the OS onto number 1. Overly complicated, sorry.

But that does not import registry settings for programs and it will overwrite the new drive.

Saw this in the HOT DEALS forum and figured that's what you're looking for. Just use their demo account.

That is more like an online hard drive. I need to transfer windows settings, programs, registry from one windows installation to another.

Thank you for the effort.

You could run Ghost (Binary Research based version) from a floppy or what-have-ye and clone the old volume/drive to the new one, then run Windows setup repair.
