I need to get off my butt and do something with my life

I was sitting on the toilet after losing a few pounds. I always sit there for a while in case there's a hanger. If you wipe right away and there is one, it's a disastrous mess.

So anyway I was just thinking about random things. I'm fairly happy with where I am in life. I'm done school, that's a huge milestone. I have a house, and a job and while things are tight, it's manageable and I'm fairly happy. I have some hobby projects, but I tend to jump around wanting to work on all of them at once while never fully getting anything out of them.

I realized, I don't want to be working for somebody else all my life and depending on the fact that the job will always be there. IT is a very risky place to be due to the constant threat of outsourcing, downsizing etc. IT is usually the first to go, IT guys are a dime a dozen, and there's tons of em looking for jobs all the time. I need to do more with my life. I've been brainstorming various paths to take either new projects or revamp existing ones. This is the beauty of being grown up and out of school, you can make decisions for yourself because you have have more time and money for it.

Basically I need to take an existing project, or make a whole new one, and monetize it to the point where I can live off it. I don't care about winning the lottery, or someone in my family winning and giving me money, I still want to earn my money, but in a less monotone way. Life is short, and it's like a roll of toilet paper. The closer to the end, the faster it goes. It's time to do something fun and profitable while I can!

...And you probably all thought this was going to be some kind of depression thread. No, this is just utter randomness.

Poop jokes are the best.

I have no words of advice, because I'm in a somewhat similar position. ...Well, I feel like I'll be at that point in ~5 years when I hit 30 lol. Sub'd.

It is. School was the hardest/most stressful part of my life so far. Don't need to dread upcoming tests or exams, or dread finding out whether or not I fail or pass a hard class. No homework. There's no bad anticipation and no ongoing stress. I just have to show up every day and do my job. I'm sure there will be bigger challenges to come, but I doubt they will last 20 years like school did. 😛 As boring as work is now, I would not want to go back to full time school. Now is the time for me to make it not boring, that's the beauty of it, really.

Learn how to handle a hanger and you learn how to handle life.

Life is one big hanger.

I've been doing IT for 25+ years and I'm still hanging on.

i was like that for a year or two after school - man what a relief, just doing my job 8-5! and then i was gradually given more responsibility over time, and then when my team lead resigned, i got his job. all of a sudden, BOOM, back to stress overload that beats college handily. manage what 5 people are doing every day on a 2$ million project, negotiate with the business customer and every other group regularly, plus try to appease everyone and calm people down when they get ticked off because there is a production bug or a slight release schedule delay.

so, not a fan. i think if i was actually working on something i give a crap about, it might be different. hence the desire to find something to do on my own.

or possibly contracting, using a technology i actually am interested in.
