My vw died again and I am finally saying screw it, time for a new car. I dont mean brand new, I mean like 2000 or so. I am not really looking for anything fancy just something to get me to work and school. I have looked at a couple 2000 Dodge Neons, and they are not too bad, probably going to get one of them. Would you recommend a Neon? Or should I look elsewhere for a car

Depends on what you are looking for.

If your looking for a coupe, check out that new Toyota Scion tC, thing is uber cheap and uber loaded.

If your looking for a sedan, go with either a Camry or an Accord, if you don't like the booty on the accord there is like a 50$ little edge they can put on it which makes it looks a whole lot better.

Otherwise...if your looking for a car that doesnt break down, look at any other Toyota or Honda.

I had a 2000 Neon and it was a very relibable car, short of the problems caused by a wreck that my fiancee engineered ;). It had some rattles, but it never let me down, ever.

I want something thats around 5-6000 not too much over that I was thinking neon cause its pretty cheap and from what I have heard reasonably reliable. VW are crap and I will never buy another one, after spending 2000 on repairs last year I am not planning to get another, so whoever recommended the audi... no thanks they have the same craptacular rating in my book. I prefer imports but I no longer trust the mechanic that was doing my car, so I am gonna get a domestic car or at least something easy to work on. If you have experience with a 2000 dodge neon let me know cause that is where I am leaning towards.

An import isn't any harder to work on then a domestic so I'm not so sure about your critera with that one.

Go foreign. I have a 95 Altima (Yes made in america by Jap specs, yada yada yada American Cars rule, blah blah blah, fasking ricer uhuh) and it has treated me well for the 5 years I have had it. It was used when bought and 4 years old. It turns 10 this year and I havn't replaced anything on it, nor have I had a problem with it.

I also can't help but recommend Toyota/Honda/Nissan. You should be able to find a good one in your price range.

Private party is your best bet at getting something where you know the history. If you can find an all-records, 1-owner granny mobile, you're set.

Get a SAAB!

:p

Nah, get an early 90's NSX :) ~$22-24,000

Such a wide range of cars to suggest... I'd get a Matrix/Celica/Solara... I like toyotas, 90's mr2 is nice too. You could pick up a 2000 Celica GT/GT-S for quite a reasonable price and they are very fun to drive, and they're also very nice.

Nissan Sentra, Saturn S-Series, Chevy Prizm, Ford Escort/ZX2, and of course the Mazda Protege are some examples of newer used cars with at least average reliability that you can buy pretty cheap. The Saturn is particularly DIY freindly, IMO (I've owned one), and replacement parts, even dealership parts, are relatively cheap. The (statistical) reliability champ would definitely be the Chevy Prizm though, since it's really a Toyota Corolla under the sheet metal.
