I need to find a stud.

No, not that kind.

Do those electronic stud finders (cheapy frm homedepot) work? I need to find the studs in my walls through standard sheetrock. Not thick, but I don't know if the tapping method really works... and I don't want to try the "knife" method.

yes those cheap ones work just fine

tehy work ok,

mark the wall in 3 spots, above and below a little bit,for where you want to "nail"into the wall

I use sheetrock screws to hang picture frames on..lots stronger.

If old plaster/lathe walls you may not even need studs..

I bought a tv hanger and I also have a heavy mirror i"m hanging from the wall. I have sheetrock screws with the plastic sheath they go into but I figured why not just try and find the stud and do it right?

i do not use the plastic sheath style, just 3 inch long sheet rock screws,in the old plater/lathe walls,

If your wall is wallboard, newer stuff then that wont work so well. These may be what you want

all they are are like metal detectors, they just search for nails.
ways to find one w/o purchasing detector.

find something else nailed in, go 16 inches, to whichever side your goin, thats another stud, then keep goin till u get there that SHOULD be a stud,

normally outlets at located just to a side of a stud, there are other ways but i forget.

The studfinders have always worked well for me in most situations. As a double check, look at your baseboard moldings along the floor. Often the nails will show and, if they were installed correctly, they will be nailed on the stud lines also.

Studs are generaly 16inches apart? So measure 16 from the nearest power outlett or something and u get a good estimate, then use the knock test.

I have used a small finish nail and probed near the floor board. Start near a outlet, touble is there is you have to guess which side the stud is on. Yes studs are on 16" centers, but is still hard to find them by measureing. Not all walls are an even multiple of 16" so one end will have a none standard spacing from the corner, you could be way off. No way of telling which corner is the one to start from, unless you built the house of course. 🙂

I have yet to invest in a stud finder, I generlly just use anchors, of course when I don't want a stud I hit one everytime!

i beleive you can use an electric shaver or anything that vibrates and run it along the wall, listen for when the sound changes
