I need to find a quadra copter that isnt junk.

Hubsan X4 are pretty decent. They'll go 300ft+ easily. They are pretty damn fast too. I always flew mine as a warm up before flying my Phantom. They do well inside too. It definitely took some time and was a lot trickier learning how to keep it stable, adjust the trim while it's in the air, etc but they are PLENTY flyable and pretty damn durable.

Just bought a neo drone Protocol, assuming smaller would be easier for a beginner.

Thing sucks. Wont stay in place, and the trim controls dont work worth a damn. It either shoots straight up or drops like a rock, the vertical throttle has no sweet spot. The alleged 6 degree gyro is shit, or the the little motors are not perfectly synced.

I need a basic quadra copter that can at least stay put while I figure out what to do next.

$400.00 and up for something not a toy. My local RC field had a few out for try out this Fall, the small ones had alot of trouble with wind drift and over control. They had a staying on station contest, the larger copters won.

Alright, its only supposed to take 40 minutes for a charge. Been two hours and thing is still weak.

Watched a few videos about syncing and flying. Should be a good model to have.

Not good. Battery is shit. Not fully charging. The copter syncs and the blades will spin for a couple seconds, then die. No idea whats going on.

It's too bad you couldn't get it to work out of the box. Got a multimeter? Check the voltage. Should be 3.85 at storage, 4.2 fully charged, and if it's below 3.4v it's considered dead. Also, is it puffed? If it is, the shitty USB cable they ship with it probably killed it. Those things should be illegal. Get this

Unlike the shitty cable, it won't overcharge the batteries till they explode and kill you.

BUMP!

Went out to hobby store today. Got a new battery. Works much better. Charges properly and lasts longer.
Quadcopter still isnt what I'd hoped for. It sorta stabilizes on its on, without inputs, but it tends to veer off in random directions and the trim controls dont help much. They just send it off in a different direction, but its never fully stable. Like the cheap model before it, the copter either rises quickly, or descends quickly. Its almost impossible to keep the thing at a stable altitude, and definitely impossible when performing maneuvers.

At least this one flies though, and it has excellent range. Also its altitude seems to be limited by the range of the remote and not so much the power of the rotors. Those things will take it plenty high if allowed. Its extremely fast even in half-speed mode. the new improved battery still only gives about 10 minutes of flight time, but at least is works.

Current plan is to return the Blade Nano QX to Amazon, head back to the hobby store, and purchase a better model.

A toy quad is going to self-stabilize, not hold a position. That's what you spend Phantom money for.

Toy quads are going to get blown around and WILL require some work to keep them in the same spot. Hell, they get blown around by their own prop washes. The solution is to learn to fly it, not return it.

I dont have that kind of time. I just wanted something fun for the gaps between classes. Its OK. I will go back to this hobby later on in life.

Did you get the blade nano qx or the Syma X5C? I have the X5C and have been very happy with it. It is a nice model to practice with inside over the winter because the flight controls closely mimic those of my larger quad. It is also a really stable quad in my experience:

Either way - sorry you had issues with the battery.

If you want a good self stabilizing copter than I think your best bet is to consider a phantom or a Blade 350 series or larger. I have a 350 qx2 with the aerial photography package and it has been a blast. In safe mode it is rock solid stable and easy to control since all the controls are relative to the pilot. In agility mode it is possible to do loops or buzz passes at easily 60-70 MPH!

Note - The batteries for the larger copters take a while to charge and they only last 10 or 15 minutes at most. So . . . you might want to invest in some extras.

Also - consider buying one or more lithium polymer bags to put your batteries in while charging. LiPO batteries can get VERY hot and several people in the local quad club have experienced small fires while recharging (not kidding).

That's the one I also got.

It's an entry-level sort of thing, though it is a bit more than the $25 minis.
The short range is a bit of a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it can't get too far away, such as, say....far enough to get itself caught in a very tall tree. :\
(I modified my controller with a higher-gain antenna that greatly increased the range. The default antenna is just a little stub of wire.)

Yes, it will drift, since there's no GPS built-in. Maybe if it had a much more sensitive accelerometer, it could compensate better.

It does survive light crashes fairly well though, and it's not bad to repair if you really screw it up.
Advice about crashing: Do not rev the motors if one of them can't move after it's on the ground, like if it binds up in weeds or grass. You'll likely burn the thing out. These designs have a lot of sacrifices made in the name of weight reduction. As you can tell by the short flight times, this is a technology that's only just recently been able to peek over the edge of the fence of marketability.

In its "high" mode, it moves pretty quick, too.

Alright, I found that in high rate mode the thing is actually MORE stable, contrary to internet advice.

Got some spare batteries and an extra charger. I intent to keep the think airborne as long as possible.

Even though my batteries don't seem to get hot I just picked up one of these bags. Better safe than sorry.

I used to have a x5c, it was pretty decent once you take the guards off, the landing gear and the camera. We were playing with it at work and got it to lift a jello pudding cup off of the desk. Shortly after it crashed into the ground, and the pudding cup dislodged and one of the blade cut through the cup and threw pudding on the wall. I don't play with it anymore on account it's stuck up in the tree outside of my office window.
