If you can afford it, Adobe Illustrator. I don't know if The Gimp (Open-source, http://www.gimp.org) has support for vector graphics. If it does, that will be a free solution :)

Adobe PhotoShop and JASC Paint Shop Pro are for bitmap/raster images, right? As you can read, I don't have much background in graphics.....

As singh said, Adobe Illustrator if you can afford it. They should have a demo on their site.

Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, and Macromedia Freehand are the industry standard apps for vector graphics, but they're most likely overkill for your needs. Try Creature House's Expression 3. They were bought out by Microsoft, and MS is giving it away for free.

No. You can add to the artwork, but you cannot edit vector graphics in raster graphics oriented programs (like Photoshop) unless you created the original file in Photoshop. This is because Photoshop does have some limited vector capabilities, but that only means you can create text on a path, simple vector shapes, etc. You cannot, for example, bring in a logo created in Illustrator or Freehand and expect to tweak it in Photoshop. You can put design elements on top and around it, but you can't change the basic image. Hope that helps.

Can a logo created in Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator be saved in a format that allows it to be edited in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro (just simple editing like changing the color of a shape)

Thank you.

You could save a vector graphic in a bitmap format (BMP, JPG, GIF, etc) and then edit it in Photoshop. Of course, you would lose all the vector information as well as the benefits of vector-based graphics (such as scalability).

my dilemma is that I had someone create a logo for me in Illustrator but I need to make some changes to it--changes in scale and color to already created elements. Is there any way for me to do this without buying Adobe Illustrator?

Thanks.

a. Ask them to do it?
b. I think Photoshop can open EPS files - you'll be prompted for the resolution and size you want, and it will be rendered as a raster image. You can then edit that image, but you can't save it as a vector image again.

Reply to:
a.) I'd ask them to do it but they would charge way too much and all I really want to do is resize/scale it and change some colors of elements and delete some elements--no new drawings.

b.) Will there still be individual elements in the EPS file that I open in PhotoShop? I have access to PhotoShop (not on my PC though) but I do have JASC Paint Shop Pro 7.

is there a way to export images created in illustrator into a photoshop-safe vector graphic?
if it's possible, then you can send the image to someone with access to illustrator, export it to photoshop file, and send it back to you..

i don't have either on my computer, so i can't test whether it's possible.
but someone might know of a way of doing that ...

No, rnmcd; you can't. You see, once you save the file and then import it into PS, PS will force you to rasterize the image in order to open it. At that point the vector shapes become un-editable (in Photoshop, at least). You should ask around at www.deviantart.com or an illustrator newsgroup. If you explain your problem in the forum, someone might be able to help you out for a small fee (or maybe even free). Good luck.

are there any programs (that are much much cheaper than Illustrator or Corel Draw) that will allow me to edit a vector file that was created in Illustrator?

I am trying the drawplus software that stndn listed above.

Here's a list of some other vector based programs. I don't know which ones open Illustrator files or not because I don't own any of them... I work in Illustrator and Freehand. If none of those programs work out for you, the Academic Superstore has Illustrator CS for 95 bucks. Can't beat that!

It looks like I'm gonna have to buy Illustrator. Is it fairly easy to learn? I won't do much actual drawing but mostly editing of .ai files.

Thanks.
