I need to capture Video off my Tivo

i want to capture movies and tv shows off of my tivo which is an Sony Sat T60 (sattellite tv) and then i want to burn what i capture to DVD-R's what do you guys reccomend
 
According to this you can't pull the data off of the drive (yet). You also need to know linux to do any hacking.

What you can do is plug in a digital camcorder to the output of the tivo and playback what you recorded with tivo; thereby recording it with the Camcorder. After that, capture to a computer, edit, compress, and burn.

i would think you can just plug the video out of the TiVo to the video in of a video card with that capability and use a video recording/editing program to capture the video and then make a DVD-R out of it.

i think that would be the simplest way, and i would recommend Ulead VideoStudio 5.0 for the software program as it can make the DVD layout for you to burn to DVD-R
 
any VIVO style regular video card (such as the Gainward GeForce2 Ti VIVO for example) will have RCA in/out, or you could buy something like the ATI TV Wonder VE (PCI card) that will let you capture with RCA input (note the ATI card does not have video output, but since you want to burn to DVD that shouldn't matter)
 
the video quality is MPEG2 (DVD quality) but that really depends on the software's options for capture, and a lot depends on your CPU (to keep up and not drop frames), so just make sure your CPU is fairly recent. also, unless your sound card has a digital input (for surround sound), you'll only be able to record in stereo (through the regular stereo line-in of your sound card).
 
i don't know if any do...i was just saying one would need a digital in to record in surround 🙂 i don't even know if any capture programs have the ability to record 6 separate signals.
 
just looked it up, and the Creative Audigy Platinum, Audigy Platinum EX, and Extigy all have optical input, so it would be a matter of the software allowing the recording of the 5.1 signal.

AFAIK pulling MPEG data off a TiVo can be done. Problem is that for fear of legal action against TiVo the topic is not handled in 'official' FAQs etc. Talk about a rotten legal system...

Try a Google search for somthing like "TiVo MPEG extract".

that would be a lot simpler and better than doing video capture (and you'd get the highest quality possible because you don't have to transfer through non-digital cables) if this actually can be done 🙂

IMO it's not worth jumping through all of these hoops when the TiVo has the video and audio data already on hdd. From a quick look, getting at that data on a TiVo's drive is not easy, but setting up a good good capturing / editing procedure (and buying the necessary hardware) isn't easy either.
