I'm new at all this network stuff and I need some help. I currently have a QNAP TS-231 NAS and 3 desktop PCs connected to my Linksys WRT1900AC router, which is then connected to my AT&T modem (I also have many wireless devices, but I don't think that is important for this discussion). The Linksys router only has 4 ports and I need one more Ethernet port for the QNAP since it has 2. I'm also wanting to take advantage of the Surveillance Station software that comes with the QNAP, and I want to connect 8 POE IP 48v Cameras to this network as well.

Here is a photo of what I want to do:
Option 1

Option 2

1) What would be a good 9 port (8 POE) switch?
2) What would be a good normal non-POE switch?
3) Will the QNAP NAS be able to see everything on this network setup?
4) Is this a totally stupid idea?
5) What do you guys/gals suggest?

Thanks,

Tom

Your not clear on if you need to physically separate the two switches from each other or if they will reside in the same location. If you are pulling all of your cable back to one location, i would get a 16 port like the NETGEAR ProSAFE JGS516PE. It has 8 ports that are PoE. If you need to separate the switches physically from each other and just make a run between them, you are going to have a problem with finding a switch with less than 16 ports but more than the 8 ports you need for the cameras. the Ubiquiti Unifi US-8-150W has 8 PoE ports and 2 SFP. You could use the SFP with relatively inexspensive transceivers to make the run between switches or back to the WRT1900AC.

For a non PoE non Managed basic switch, you can't go wrong with any 8 Port gigabit switch from someone reputable like Netgear or Linksys. you can find them for under $30 dollars usually.
