I need some smaller Stereo speakers

My parents have these big floor speakers each with a 15" woofer. They sound great, but my mom has been nagging me to find some smaller ones since this interior designer told her "there's just no way to work with those huge speakers".

Am I going to be able to find any small speakers that sound as nice as the big ones? and where should I start looking?
 
Bose. I have one of their lifestyle thingamajigs with the little cube speakers. Despite all the critics, they sound decent. Buy them on clearance if you can, they aren't worth full price.
 
fvck what the interior designer says, Function > form

that being said Klipsch, Fluance, and B&W make great bookslelf sized speakers
 
Check with Musiciansfriend.com and get a set of NEARFIELD CONTROL ROOM MONITORS. There are many brands to pick from and they will sound fine.
I have a set of Tannoy REVEALs and they kick in a living room.
Also look at MACKIE and JBL for reasonably priced speakers.
 
Here's what I'd do. There are some great opportunities for having even better bass than you currently have.

Speakers (2) - for the left and right channels. Consider Paradigm Titan or Atom speakers. Then, add a subwoofer in the corner - out of the way. Set your receiver to (both) for front speakers + sub to play the bass through your sub and the crossover should be set to 80Hz.

For subwoofers, I'd consider the SVS PB10-ISD which is priced at approx. $400 and comes in several finished colors. The Paradigm speakers come in black or cherry vinyl veneers. The Titans are priced at approx. $200 - $219 a pair and would be my personal pick over the atoms. However, the Atoms are slightly smaller and also come in white.

For $600, you could have some great, bang up sound that would make a decorator quite happy.

Good bookshelf speakers from Polk or Paradigm will work well, though if you want to preserve bass add a subwooder.

Bose is cute but you lose a lot of the all-important midrange sound when you go too small on the left / right front speakers. It can be OK for movies, but lousy for music.
 
I can't believe Bose is being mentioned. Some people have no idea of what good sound is what-so-ever. :roll: :roll:

For less money, you can get wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better sound from following what I've described above.

I was communication with another member via E-mail last evening about receivers. Over the past 3 years, I've owned the following 8 receivers: JVC RX8000VBK, Denon AVR-1802, Yamaha HTR-5560, Denon AVR-1803, Sony STR-DA4ES, H/K AVR-7200, Yamaha HTR-5650, Yamaha HTR-5760 and now the Pioneer 54TX.

My wife knows I've switched about 3 times over the past 3 years, but would shiat a brick if she knew it was actually 8 times. :Q :Q


 
Also, I should add that if the mother or decorator in this situation are completely agains a subwoofer cube, you could always go with an infinite baffle subwoofer where you would place it into the wall or ceiling of an out-of-the-way place. This method is also quite cheap way to accomplish a lot of bass. A 12" infinite baffle subwoofer from Parts Express runs about $130. Utilize a 250 watt plate amp for approximately another $130 and some misc. wood to mount it and a cheap metal furnace grill and you have some house-shaking bass for well under $300. The 250 watt plate amp is more than enough power for an infinite baffle setup - and probably would only require 120 or so watts.

Again, this method produces some bass that cabinet-based subs can't even begin to compete with - and the price is so cheap.

LOL!

Right now I'm running a Rotel RB-990BX 200wpc power amp driven by a trusty NAD7240PE and am quite satisfied, although I'd like to move to a dedicated rotel pre-amp, but my computer spending ruined my Hi-Fi budget. :laugh:

Brief, but to the point 😀
What kind of amplification are you using? The small 2-Way speaker/concealed sub works well but you'll typically need a sub pre-out on your amplifier. It also depends on what you want to do with them - a pair of slim floorstanding speakers would do just fine for most music - something like the Kef Q4s (which sound sublime, if a little light on bass) or Mission M53s (less refined but truly powerful)
