I need some serious help

I was having trouble covering my entire house with a wireless connection with my standard linksys router (WRT54GL, the one that everybody and their grandma owns) so I decided to buy a TrendNet TEW-633GR and had no problem covering my house in a good connection.

Anyway, my main computer connects through a cable. I tried connecting to the new router with a standard RJ45 cable and I get local access but no internet. So I tried the old router and had the same problem. I also tried plugging directly into the cable modem, and somehow, amazingly, I get local access but no internet.

My Xbox360 is able to connect flawlessly through a cable and my laptop (which I am using now) is able to connect flawlessly through wireless. I figured that my problem was a general hardware error and bought myself an Encore ENLWI-N. I just installed it and I still only get local access. No internet.

Other facts:
  • Sometimes while connected my computer would report internet access but I would not be able to use it. Afterwards, it would say that there is no internet access.
  • I am using vista ultimate.
  • The light indicating my computer's ethernet connectivity on the router is orange, while for the Xbox360 it is blue.

If anybody here that is smarter than me can help me figure this out that would be awesome.

Turn off the modem and router, wait at least 60 seconds and then turn on the modem. Wait at least 60 seconds and then turn on the router.

check your IP address settings on your main computer. Make sure you have the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" options on.

That doesn't make sense. If you are plugging directly into your cable modem, you should not have local access. Are you sure you have your cables right? What are the lights on your cable modem telling you?
