Ok I was just checking out my systems event viewer to see if there were any problems and sure enough I got this error several times (this cut right from event viewer);
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: DnsApi
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11153
Date: 2/8/2002
Time: 10:55:05 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MASTERCLIENT
Description:
The system failed to register network adapter with settings:

Adapter Name : {6E61B869-xxxx-4A9C-9D63-xxxxxxxxxx} edited
Host Name : masterclient
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : xxxx.com edited
DNS server list :
192.168.1.1
Sent update to server : 192.168.1.1
IP Address(es) :
192.168.1.8

The reason it could not register was because the DNS server refused the dynamic update request. This could happen for the following reasons: (a) current DNS update policies do not allow this computer to update the DNS domain name configured for this adapter, or (b) the authoritative DNS server for this DNS domain name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.

To register a DNS host (A) resource record using the specific DNS domain name for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
Data:
0000: 2d 23 00 00 -#..

I'm not quite sure what it means but I know that I can't ping by computer name from another computer but I can ping by IP. What's even wierder is that if I do try to ping by name it resolves to a different IP, yet my DHCP/DNS server shows a leased addy of the correct IP.

I've searched through MS and eventid.net for this error but nothing shows up. All other systems on my network are fine and I can ping anything else just fine also from any machine.

It's not really affecting anything and it is just a warning but I still want to know what's going on. Any help or thoughts appreciated!

One thing you could try,

Go to the client (MASTERCLIENT) and remove it from the domain, Do this by connecting it to a Workgroup.

Then go to yoru Server and Delete the computer account of MASTERCLIENT.

Now reconnect MASTERCLIENT to the domain.

It should create a new MASTERCLIENT computer account with the SID of your computer.

My guess is something went wrong with the computer authenticating to the domain and that is why it isn't allowing you to update the DNS entry.

Look up the error code in Microsoft's KnowledgeBase.
I've seen notes on that error, and it may just be that your DNS server is missing some config info to allow it to properly process Dynamic DNS updates.

One other thing that might have affected it was that I installed a new network card. Do you think that might have an effect? What about using a Ghosted (did I make that up?) image? Would that have an affect on the SID?

TallGeese, I tried going to the knowledge base and didn't find anything but I'll look again.
