can you go ahead and post them, so the answers/riddles are consolidated? I have read through the other thread and it is quite difficult to read.

Golf Balls: Split in to three equal sized groups. The scale will either move up or down or balance. This places the ball in one of 2 groups: The group of 4 if the scale balances, or the group of 8 if it didn't balance. If it is in the group of 4, then the group of 8 is good. It is trivial to prove that you can find the unknown ball in the group of 4 with the addition of 4 good balls that you can weigh against. If it is in the group of 8, that can be split in to two groups with 8 possible outcomes each. What groups you choose have to be deliberate, because 2 weighings can discover 9 things (3^2 = 9) at most.

Coins: Take 1 coin from bag 1, 2 coins feom bag 2, etc. Weigh the 55 coins you have. If bag 1 is off, the scale will be off by 0.01. It it is bag 2 it is off by 0.02, etc.

marbles: Put one white marble in a jar and all others in another. Your probability is now 74/99 that you live.

Robbers: Person 1 offers 100-0-0-0-0. Person 2 and 4 are forced to agree or else they are guaranteed to die. Person 3 and 5 will *always* refuse any offer.

Smurfs: The 50th smurf agrees to act as a parity bit. They count all 49 hats in front of them and call out white if there are an odd number of white hats or black otherwise. All people in front of him can then deduce their hat by counting the hats in front of them and comparing it to the parity bit. 49 smurfs live and the last had a 50/50 chance of living.

Dragon: The dragon brings 2 glasses from well 6, knowing that it'll cure whatever the knight gives him and that the knight can't cure himself from 6. The knight brings 2 glasses of regular water, but before going drinks from well 1. the Dragon drinks the regular water and then well 6 water killing himself. The knight, already poisoned with well 1 water, drinks the well 6 water saving himself and then the regular water and goes on his merry way.

What row: 1113213211. This describes the previous row. one 1, one 3, two 1s, three 2s, one 1.

Switches: Turn 1 switch on for 5 minutes. Turn it off and then turn a different one on. Go in the room. The light on you know. Of the 2 off, the one that is warm will be your first switch.

You place a quarter right in the center of the table. After that, whenever the devil places a quarter on the table, mimic his placement on the opposite side of the table. If he has a place to place a quarter, so will you. The devil will run out of places to put a quarter before you do.

Actually it is correct. I have a full proof for the general (3^n3)/2 problem and that is it. I just left out a lot of the details. You can figure it out from that though.

Edit: Actually, looking at that I may have stated it wrong.

Edit2: Better? A bit simplified from the full fledged proof, but correct and enough to work it out on your own.

I don't think golf ball one is doable if you don't know whether the odd ball is lighter or heavier than the rest.

 
you would only know what group the ball is in and wether it was heavier or lighter. and you would only need to use the scale twice to know that... as for the third use...

i don't think it would be possible... you'd be left with four balls and only one use of the scale.

edit2: if you knew it was heavier or lighter than it would be doable. but using a different method.

now what do you do?

But you can find it out i the precess of doing the weighings. You can think of it as a decision tree. There are 12 balls that can possibly be the odd one, each either lighter or heavier. So there are 12*2=24 possible outcomes to the puzzle. Each weighing can discover 3 things (up, down, or balances) so in 3 weighings you can discover 3^3=27 things at most. It is possible to make the 24 leaf outcome tree balance in to the 27 leaf decision tree.

In those 4 balls there are 8 possible outcomes. Each ball can be lighter or heavier. 4*2=8. In 2 weighings you can discover at most 9 things. (3^2=9) It still fits in the decision tree.

The way to do it is to weigh 3 unknowns against 3 goods that you previously discarded. That splits the the decision tree again in to 3-3-2, both of which can be solved in a single weighing.

In the first 3 you know it is ligher, in the second 3 you know it is heavier, in the 2 you don't know its weight but can compare it to a good on the last weighing to find out.

actually the one where the 4 and 4 balances is doable now I just realized.

you do 1 and 1 on the second weigh.

and then you weigh one of the two remaining ones against one of hte ones you weighed on the 2nd try.
