I need some receiver suggestions

A friend of mine is about to buy a new one, he doesn't want to spend more than 400. He will eventually be upgrading all his speakers but will be using his Panasonic HTIB speakers for now. He has a Samsung tv with HDMI so an HDMI input would be nice. Also where would be some of the best places to buy? I know of jr.com but that's it.
 
Onkyo 606 is pretty much the value leader for inputs, features, and performance. It's basically the Camry or Accord of the AVR market.

If you are more of a Volkswagen guy look at the HK-247. Not as many features, but a little slicker looking and more "personality" when it comes to sound.
 
The Pioneer 1018 is also a nice unit and just came out. If he is not going to be using an HTPC, the Yamaha 663 is in his price range and has some really nice features. If he wanted to eke out a little more, the Denon 1909 is a very nice receiver. Has all the newest Audessey software on it like Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ. J&R has a special going on right now for $499 with free shipping.

All of those receivers can utilize the newest HD audio codecs so he will be somewhat future-proof.
 
I second the suggestion for the Denon 1909 receiver, have one and really like it.
Not sure the special at J&R is still going on now that was being offer before they listed them on there web page and was a preorder but still worth calling to check out.
 
All great suggestion here. I'd say the Onkyo 606 is the closest match to the OP's criteria, but I'd suggest picking it up at your local B&M store with a good return policy. Quite a few people have been reporting buzzing from this receiver, but it seems like the luck of the draw. It may buzz or may not. If it doesn't, you're good. 🙂

The 1909 is a great receiver but may be out of the OP's price range. I think it is very nicely priced though and if the OP can get it for $499, that should work.

Another option is the Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K. VERY nice receiver for around $475 (Amazon). The only negative, no power to the sub. However, if you have a powered sub, I think this would be the perfect receiver for you. Very nice looking too. 😉
