mmm pho... nothing like overrated cheap noodles that make you smell bad.

i've had tons of pho thanks to friends who think i just haven't had a good bowl yet. it doesn't taste bad, but it is seriously one of the most overrated foods i have ever seen. they're not any better than any other noodles, and worse than quite a few that i can think of. phad thai is overrated too, though not as much. and weezer.

NP. Open one up yourself. Otherwise, time to hit the freeway. A few good places in Torrance/Hawthorne. Closer then the valley.
Where in Torrance/Hawthorne would you recommend?

Hmm. There's a place on Hawthorne just north of Rosecrans or El Segundo, I forget which. West side of the street. That place was pretty good.

Good sized Vietnamese population here in Portland, several Pho restaurants to choose from... love it.

Here's a google link I dug up... looks like there's even a few Pho Ha's (international Pho restaurant chain) in the LA area: text

What are some good PDX PHO places you recommend?

There's a PHO place near where I used to work that made this dish they called the #41, a sliced beef and rice dish with what was called "fish sauce". I lived on that stuff for like 2 years, and it was yummy. However, at some point they stopped serving that and switched to a noddles only menu, so I stopped going there. Similar dishes I've tried at other PHO places have just not been the same... :(

Pho Hung is my favorite. There are 3 in town: 1 on the north side of Powell at about 46th, 1 near 72nd and Fremont, and 1 on Canyon Rd. in Beaverton just west of Cedar Hills Blvd. Just order a large #11 (only $5.25) and prepare yourself for the biggest bowl of beef noodle soup you've ever had. Salad rolls are pretty good there too, but not the best. Service is stupid fast.
There's also another nice one I like (forgot the name though) on the southwest corner of 72nd and Sandy (IIRC).

Portland People: Pho Van on SE 82 (I think) is not that bad for what you guys have up there.

Note that I live near Little Saigon, so anything better that what you can get there is what my parents cook

I have relatives that live up there so I visit them frequently (like 4 times in the last year). That is the place where we get the "home cooking" :)

Do you guys tip in Pho places. It seems borderline fastfood to me. Also the places here have you come to the counter to pay.

for you so cal'ers
Pho Ha Vietnamese Restaurant
695 Indian Hill Blvd, Pomona, CA 91767 - 909 622-7578

you can tell me all about the noodles and the meat ... but let me tell you. pho is all about the broth. you got bad broth, you got bad pho. this place has the best pho in socal, even better than westminster imho.

in the berkeley area in norcal
99 ranch market in the back and this one place in oakland chinatown across the street from the big parking structure. the only two decent places i've eaten. avoid at all costs durant square pho. that place takes like nasty. =)

I usually just leave whatever coin change they leave me. If they came over with the bill they would get full tip.
Another problem is that sometimes I eat really spicy pho and I drink water and they watch me sit there and suck ice and don't bring me more water.
Actually I stopped eating much pho nowadays. I just go to trader joe's, get that chicken base, and make broth and put those chicken potstickers they sell in there, 5 minutes and you are done. Add some celery, and it's good stuff, and costs 1-2 bucks or something instead of 5 for pho.
