I just have an old pc that I am upgrading for fun. I have ran into a snag. The pc has a P MMX cpu at 233 meg, The socket type is 7. So I ordored an AMD -K6-2 at 550 meg. After I slapped the new cpu in and put the fan on, I plugged the PC in and started it. The cpu only runs at 66 meg and it will only do the memory test then it restartes the PC. I can't even go to settings by hitting delete.
Can anyone help me?

This is just a wild guess...

The K6 CPU that you are trying to use is a super socket 7 processor (it has a split voltage). If the Pentium CPU did not have a split voltage then the motherboard probably does not support split voltage CPU's.

Hope this helps. If not, consider it a BUMP...

Which motherboard are you using? Did you look in the manual to see which jumpers need to be set for the AMD cpu and even if it is supported? The mobo probably doesnt support the K6-2 at that speed.......

I dont have a manual for the motherboard. I have tried the cpu on my dad's comp. It allready has an AMD
cpu at 500 meg. I put the cpu in it and it read at 500 meg. Is that wrong? Pluse I was talking to a local computer repain guy. And he said that i might have to (heaven forbid) stick with Pentenum or something like it. I hope not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't just drop those K6 chips in without setting the correct multiplier and FSB and voltage. More than likely your motherboard has some jumpers that need to be set. I would find the name of your motherboard and do a search for the jumper settings. Try looking on the mobo's manufacturers site first.

THATS just it. I cant find a stanp or mark on it anywhere. I think its an AT 100???????? something. Also whats really sucks is that now is that It works with Linux Red Hat 7.1 just fine. A nother prob is that I only
have a 1.18 gig hard drive. And I dont have any other softwar for Linux exept for the install disc and disc manuals. Anyone know where I can get at least a 5 gig?
Once I get the cpu problem fixed the Hard drive is next, or a new graphics card. I have an old diamond stealth 3d pro 2 mb card and i have 6 slots on the card for putting V ram on it. Do I have to get a special kind?
Any help would be appreated.
