hard drive. It installs perfectly on a Soltek KT-400 chipset mb. But it locks up in the Bios when I try to get a BH6 Abit mb AND a first generation BX chipset Soyo mb to recognize the hard drive. I have tried many jumper settings to no avail. This is getting me stumped!

Any suggestions?? I tried calling WD and they said to upgrade the BIOS but I have installed many 40 gig or larger hard drives on many BX chipset mb with no problems in the past. The hard drive was just purchased last week.

Thanks for reading.

Those other motherboards may already have BIOS support for the drive and your one that doesn't work may not. Your best bet is upgrade the BIOS. At least look at the available BIOS updates for the motherboard, the manufacturer generally lists what the update adds/fixes.

Latest bios upgrade did the trick and now the Abit mb sees 40 gigs. Now to see if the Soyo mb has a upgrade...

I have a few 400JB WDC drives and they are a single platter version of the 800JB. They have 8MB of cache.

Cheers!

The bios upgrade did the trick for the Soyo mb and the job is now history.
