I need some CPU advice, Celeron or Cyrix 3?

I have two PCs right now, and I need to do a lot of DivX4 encoding. My main machine is in use to often for me to use it for encoding as it takes too long, though its much faster. My second machine is a 433 Celeron with 320 megs of PC100 RAM, residing in an Asus CUV4x mobo with the 1009 bios rev installed.

Using my second machine to encode the files is easier cause that machine is rarely used for any thing and i can leave it be for long periods of time. Even so, its 433 celeron will take a good 11 to 12 hours to encode a lower res DivX movie.

I cannot afford a Duron/Sis735 combo at this time. I can get a Celeron 800 from Newegg.com for $56.95 shipped, or a Cyrix 3 933 for around 70. The catch is that the Cyrix 3 uses the 133fsb, and my ram is PC100. I could OC, but the ram is el cheapo generic RAM, I doubt it could handle a 33mhz OC.

So basicly, I can get a Cyrix 3 700 for about 45 or a Celeron 800 for 56.95. Should I take the Celeron or the Cyrix 3? I don't want to spend more than about 70 bucks.

do a search on pricewatch for via cyrix 900 you will get to results, one is for a laptop, and one is for a 900mhz processot, from axion technologies in TX. 900mhz, 100mhz bus speed, $60 before shipping.

The tests I have seen show the Cyrix to be WAY slower than a Celeron. Newegg has the C900 for only $2 more than the C800

The primary benefit of the C3 is its low power consumption, ~11W using a HS only. The Celly draws ~22W and will require a HSF, but will out perform the C3 hands-down. If performance, rather than silence is the requirement, go with the Celly.

The ONLY reason why anyone should ever get a C3 is if they want something that uses less power than a Pentium MMX.

i'd say definately go for the celeron, unless you really want a super quiet system, as the cyrix 3 generates so little heat that can be run with passive cooling, while the celeron needs an active cooling solution. also, as other ppl have mentioned, the celeron performs way better than the cyrix 3.

I may be able to get a P3 733 and a 256meg stick of PC133 for cheap from a computer teacher.

I am thinking that a P3 733 would be better than the cely 800/900 at encoding, correct?

if u can get a good deal on the p3 733, i'd personally jump on that over a celeron or cyrix anywhere near the same clock speed.
