Go ahead and hate M$, but realise that when the original playstations and PS2's started dying withing the first 6 months that Sony denied any problem, and made a huge hassle of rectifying the situation. What did M$ do with the optical mouse problem they had? Thats right! A toll free call and a new mouse was promptly shipped... no one had to even return theres! They could keep it and just replace the wire if they wanted to! Retailers won't forget about how Nintendo tried to dominate the market by disallowing retailers to merchandise it's competitors products in the same store. Gamers remember the overly censored SNES games. Simply put; M$ has the best console out right now. It has enough great games to keep you busy until many more arrive. It's the same price, superior hardware, modable just like PS2, better online service, etc...

AMD - It all depends on what you want. The Xbox does have better specs and capabilities, along with the XBOX live feature debuting later this year. Of course you have to have broadband to take advantage of it though. The Xbox also offers Halo - a really good 1st person shooter. Multiplatform games are best on the Xbox because of its capabilities, especially sports games. Where you'd normally have to have memory cards to save multiple seasons/franchises, the Xbox provides a hard drive. The PS2 has less power, but a number of AAA titles. If you want to play Grand Theft now or in the near future, for console gaming you'll need the PS2. The Gran Turismo series is also only found on PS2, and arguably worth buying a PS2 alone for. Don't forget about the hundreds of other games already in the library - there are a number of great titles. This past weekend I played the new Medal of Honor - amazing. The online plan for the Playstation will allow you to use dialup if you don't have broadband (of course you'll need to buy an accessory to do so), and the Sony first party titles will be free to play online. Consider what you want it for, your online desire, game preference, then make a choice. They are both great systems, but neither is right for every person. Congrats on your soon-to-be new purchase, let me know what you get.

The PS2 is the top dog for now...

Gamecube will explode with Mario, Zelda, Metroid...
Xbox is just hitting its stride...

It is going to be an interesting holiday season... we'll see who wins 😀

PS2 ............... $200
XBox ............. $200
Gamecube .... $150
-----------------------------
Total .............. $550

Cheaper to buy all 3 than it was to put together my PC.

The Playstation 2 is a hunk of cr@p. The graphics are worse than Dreamcast, the only killer app (Grand Theft Auto III) is now available on the PC. The Playstation 2 also gets a lot of goofy, corny Japanese games. The X-Box has the American titles that you would actually want to play, like sports games, Halo, Morrowind, etc.

Most PS2 sales these days go to casual gamers, because the PS2's library of budget $10 and $20 titles is quite extensive. The X-Box, being a newer system, has mostly newer titles which are priced around $50.

The Playstation 2's showing at E3 was beyond pathetic this year. The whole show consisted of Sony's Chairman saying repeatedly "We have sold 30 million units, the console wars are over!" PS2's online plans are a joke.

The X-Box had a spectacular showing. Might want to check out the X-Box press briefing here.. Scroll about 24 minutes into that bad boy for lots of yummy goodness 😎 😀 🙂 😎 😀 🙂 😎

As far as system exclusives go, right now there's Morrowind and Halo, which most will agree are the best console RPG and FPS, respectively, of all time. When it comes to cross platform games like Spiderman, Max Payne, or FIFA soccer, the X-Box has totally crushed PS2 and Gamecube versions everytime because it is a much more powerful and versatile system.

Going into 2003, I see no future for the PS2 or Gamecube.

My Game systems:

NES
Genesis
SNES
GameBoy (original)
GameBoy Color
Sony Playstation
N64
Sega Dreamcast
Gameboy Advance
Playstation 2
Nintendo Gamecube

and as always a gaming PC (my AT rig listing is WAY out of date now).

I have not, do not now, and can't see myself in the future, wanting an X-Box.

Maybe for Halo, but one game just isn't worth it IMHO.
Morrowind - PC
DOA3 - pretty, gets old fast. (yes I played it)

Everything else is out on something else. Or flat out sucks.

Come on, DOA: Extreme Volleyball? Put all the boobies in it you like, its still VOLLEYBALL.

WEE.

X-Box is loosing money hand over fist, has the smallest installed base by far, and is dead in Europe and Japan. (http://www.msnbc.com/news/772001.asp)

"Sony has shipped about 32 million PlayStation 2 machines world-wide, while Microsoft was expected to have shipped only 3.5 million to four million Xboxes by Sunday, the end of its fiscal year. " - http://www.msnbc.com/news/774751.asp

Nintendo has shipped around 9 million Gamecubes.

None of these are certain doom, but let's face it: Games are all Nintendo does, and the GBA alone can float the GameCube forever. Sony has nearly TEN times the # of machines as an installed base... no way 32 million users is going to just vanish.

Developers go where there is $$$. Do you sell to 3.5 million users or 32 million?

Now, that said - I'm certainly no fanboy. And if I were the following, I'd buy an X-Box:

1) A somewhat casual gamer
2) Not huge on PC gaming
3) Don't have a DVD player
4) Like sports games and racing games
5) Owned no other consoles
6) Not too worried about my system "coming out on top" or "winning the console wars".

Its a good machine with some very good games.

So was the Dreamcast though.

1) The graphics are NOT worse than dreamcast (duh!)
2) Oh so Grand Theft Auto 3 now on the PC (9 months later) hurts the PS2 while Morrowind already on the PC doesn't affect X-Box?
3) All consoles have the same sports games, so X-Box looks a little better, yippie frickin doo!
4) Ok Halo...is that all? (But it should come out on PC so!!!!)
5) So only hardcore gamers will spend $50 on a game because they have nothing else to spend it on? Yes, the PS2 does have Best Hits games that are $20, how is this a disadvantage? The games sold enough to where lowering the price is both profitable and appealing to consumers... So Gran Turismo 3 isn't a hardcore game?
6) Wow the X-Box is newer! Kewl! (Do the brand new thing!)
7) Comparing PS2 exclusives to X-Box exclusives, PS2 has more in the past, and just as many as X-Box in the future (except all those lovely PC ports).
8) Online gaming...ok, don't really care about that crap, I have a life to live...
9) PS2 at E3
10) Morrowind and Halo are the great exclusives but Morrowind isn't exclusive, it has a better and patched version that came out earlier on the PC, you should know that. And for Halo? ONE GAME! And it's coming out on the PC anyway so...yea. What does the PS2 have? Um....

Gran Turisimo 3
Metal Gear Solid 2 (exclusive till fall)
Devil May Cry
Grand Teft Auto 3 (exclusive to consoles)
All Final Fantasies
ICO
Silent Hill 2

Several exclusive AAA titles while X-Box has only one for now...

11) You ask a PC forum which is better, you get X-Box...
12) No future for either PS2 and Gamecube? Wow, I'll laugh at you next year. Even Gamecube has Zelda, Mario, Metriod and several other games which earned its lineup the best of E3 award from Gamespy.
13) 13 is a cool number...

Having recently made this decision myself, I will provide the reasons for my decision. I bought the PS2 about a week and a half ago.

I chose the PS2 for these reasons:

1) Extensive library of games. Many great games not currently (or potentially ever) available on any other console. Of the top of my head (GT3, GTA3, EA Sports Rugby, Metal Gear Solid 3, ...)
2) Every game I wanted for the Xbox (except Halo) was available on the PS2.
3) Huge installed base. This means (to me) that the quality and number of games would continue to exceed that of the XBox.
4) Sony's greatest hits. This allowed me to get a couple of really good games for $20US or $30Can (including GT3). I will not pay $50+ US on a game. Unfortunately, there is no similar practice for the XBox. Since I don't pirate, this means all my Xbox games would need to be used.
5) XBox has a very restrictive policy on development practices. This makes it difficult and expensive for companies to develop XBox games. I don't know the details, but this comes directly from a friend of mine who was a developer for Morrowwind.

XBox has a lot of potential, but it doesn't have good followership outside of North America. A lot of good games come from countries outside of North America. In order for XBox to reach its full potential, these countries will need to accept the Xbox the way they have the PS2 and the number and quality of games will need to improve.

I may still buy an Xbox, but I will not spend that much money on a console that only has one or two games I want to play especially when I need to spend at least $50US to get those games.

Hope this helps.

BTW - I have another friend who already owned the PS2 and decided to buy an XBox from EB on the $100 credit deal (trading in his old original PS). He has had it for a couple of weeks and told me today that he is really unhappy with the available games. He owns Halo but says there isn't another XBox game he wants.

I am very happy and comfortable with my decision.

Well, North America does account for 55% of entire global video gaming market. The X-Box is kicking ass over here, and will have 300+ titles by the end of the year so I don't see what your point is.

This is a typical Japanese sales chart:

1.Kingdom Hearts.PS2.58,123.582,222
2.ARMORED CORE3.PS2.33,631.148,727
3.From TV animation ONE PEACE.PS.31,870.365,283
4.Super Robot Taisen IMPACT.PS2.30,737.489,002
5.Tekken 4.PS2.24,542.253,949

12.Gundam Fed vs Jion DX.DC.9,278.9,278
13.Biohazard.GC.7,833.156,921

The point is, that most Japanese games never make it to the U.S., because of excessive wierdness or differences in gaming preferences. Most games sold in the U.S. are made by American or European software developers.

The X-Box is doing fairly well in Europe since the price cut. They've sold over a million units over there, and have a comfortable lead over Gamecube.

As for Japan, American electronics goods have never done well over there. Have you taken a look at the trade deficit lately? Mercantilism is the national religion of the orient. Japan's entire national pride is based on their manufacturing sector - especially their consumer electronics industry - which in recent years has been going down the crapper. If you're Japanese and you're somehow able to find an American television set for sale in Japan, and you buy it, you're basically excommunicated from Japanese society. They take this sh|t really seriously over there. I am not kidding.

Microsoft was told by a lot of industry analysts that it would be pointless to peddle their X-Box in Japan. Even if the X-Box was the greatest thing since sliced bread and Microsoft was practically giving it away for free over there, no Japanese would take it, because there's a deep visceral hatred over there for American electronics.

Oh well, the X-Box is a huge success in the U.S. (which accounts for half of the world's video gaming market, as pointed out previously) and Microsoft has got games lined up out the wazoo, as well a $60 billion war chest. What more could you ask for? LOL.

Shantanu~ You seem to be more concerned with microsoft's success than the point at hand: the games! Who cares about all this business crap, show me stats that say X-Box is more popular than PS2 in the US or anywhere (hardware or software) and I will listen. Last time I checked, X-Box and GC were even and PS2 was dominating.

Anyway...yea, an often ignored PS2 feature is it plays all the older PSX games, which is very useful to me as I've been buying classic PSX games I missed out on (Metal Gear Solid, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Castlevania, Crono Cross, etc.)

I have heard that the X-box has been cracked so as to play games that are recorded on cdr's for back-up. Can anybody verify this?

Shantanu always turns these threads into USA vs the world (in car threads as well).
He's gone so far as to search the last names in each member profile that supported the PS2 (or import cars) to see if they resembled Asian decent.

He's one of the most racist members on this board.
I'd ignore anything that he posts.

wolfman~ If you still care about this thread, I'll try to explain some stuff.

The main reason I bought PS2 instead of X-Box is it has a distinct gaming style different than most PC games. I love PC games especially FPS and Adventure games. X-Box is very similar to a PC in design, and such, gets a lot of PC ports or PCish games. Now why would you want to spend $200 something dollars so you can play more PClike games? I dunno. PS2 (and GC to a slight extent) have most consoleish games and I think that's a good contrast to the more thoughtful PC games.

If you want variety, I'd say go with the PS2. If you hate console games and just want a closed PC with a few exclusives...well ok.
