I need some advice....

This is almost YAGT, but it's also a YAJobT.

I got a call from a recruiter 3 weeks ago. They found a resume I posted earlier this year and saw I'd be a match with a company in Chicago. They called me last week and scheduled a phone interview for today....they want me to fly up for an in-person interview later this week. The problem is that the pay is twice what I make now in Chattanooga, TN.

To make things complicated: I got married last year. However, my wife is studying to be a Physician Assistant in Nashville, TN. So she lives 2 hours away and we see each other every week or so, but it's usually every 2 weeks. She won't be done with her program until August of 2009, but may have the option to do her clinicals in Chattanooga...Chicago would be more difficult due to the driving she'd have to do...especially with the traffic.

Neither of us want to settle in Chicago, but I see this opportunity to live cheap up there and help pay off her school and my home mortgage in Chattanooga. Also, the job experience would be great and it would really build my resume. I figure I'll make enough coin to fly back to see her every 2 weeks, but don't want to strain our marraige too much for financial gain.

I'm definitely going to talk this over with the wife, but need to really calculate what it costs to live in Chicago if I'm pinching pennies and calculate the profit after taxes. Any advice?

You already only see your wife once every two weeks for the next two years, I think it should be obvious that any further move could be potentially disastrous to your relationship.

It's not bad when you consider it's just me. All I'd need is a studio and a train pass.

Agreed. She's upset about the change, as am I. I just look at this as a chance to eliminate a good portion of her school debt and or my mortgage. We're both wanting to move back to where we grew up after she gets out of school... It's just a matter of how we get there and what our finances will look like.

Have you seen Indecent Proposal?

My friend had an efficiency in downtown Chicago...$1200/month for one room with a bathroom.

No thanks.

True. I don't count my chickens before they hatch or whatever....but I'm just going over the possibilities here because it's a big decision.

$1200 is way too much unless the place is just really nice or overpriced based on location. Some areas are trendier than others. I'm just looking for a place to hang my hat at night. Nothing big, nothing fancy.

I did this. Sort of.

In the relationship (not married) for 2 years, 6 months.
She was moving from Oregon to Nashville for up to 2 years.
I was going to stay behind and wait for her, with monthly visits.
I ended up moving there 2 months after she did and worked long haul trucking. I got to see her every 3-8 weeks for a couple days. She was so busy with school, anymore would not have been good for her GPA.
I moved back after a year, and she followed 7 months later.

Still together now 3 years after the move back home.

It was NOT easy. Lots of time on cell phones and with spotty coverage on my side, emotions could easily get out of control.

Monies comes and goes, but relationship with your wife doesn't. Why not see if there's a higher paying job at your current place?

Agreed. Higher paying jobs with actual job security are hard to come by around here. If I were to relocate to where she's going to school, I'd be hard pressed to find a job that matches my qualifications as precisely as this opportunity.

My relationship with my wife is strong enough to withstand the distance. However, she's not at peace with the airline idea. She doesn't fear flying, but the idea of not being able to jump in a car any time she feels like it and hit the road may be a showstopper. A flight between us is actually 30 minutes faster than the drive. (not counting airport security time)

Doesn't sound like its worth the headache, especially if you have no interest in moving to chicago. Stay put with the wifey and enjoy life.

Unless there is a reasonable chance of her stuyding near Chicago, I see no reason to bother with the interview.
