Alright, here are the details.....

P4 2.8
ASUS P4C800 Delux
2 x 256MB Mushkin 3500 lvl2
WD 37GB Raptor connected to the sata1 on the MB
5900 128MB nu
Zalman ALCU 7000
Sound Blaster Live (I think it is a 16 from an old system that I canibalized)

Windows XP pro was installed ok (student version that I got for free)

Anyway, here are my problems...

windows main screen looks odd in that there is only one icon (recycle bin). I have used this installation cd before and it was fine (that was on my old p3)

I can't reinstall my cable modem software package (from comcast cable). It won't pass the internet connection test. Looking in the device manager, my ethernet controller drivers are not installed. I know it is not my internet connection because I am able to use my wireless network to use my laptop to write this message.

I'm generally just speptical that something is really wrong, and I don't have the experience or know how to know what to do. This is my first attempt at a build from scratch.

Should I get rid of the sound blaster and just go with whatever on board sound there is? If so, how do I do that?

Please help, I can give you any other details you need to know, just ask.

Thanks,
Ryan

install your chipset and motherboard drivers. They should have come on a CD, or you can download the latest set from asus's site.

That'll get your NIC working, at which point you should be able to get everything else going.

After which, install Windows updates, drivers updates, etc all night, then see if anything else needs fixed :)

Just the Recylce Bin is the default setup, no other icons are usually on the desktop. You need to get your ethernet card working before doing anything else. Install the drivers for the NIC, then your Comcast should work fine. You DO NOT need to install the crappy Comcast software. Good luck!

Ok, cool, thanks for the help, I got the internet working for me now.

How about my sound problem? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Ryan

The onboard sound should be fine. I would yank out the SB and just use the onboard sound.

OK, i yanked out the SB board and uninstalled the software for it. Windows is now seeing SoundMAX, which was installed from the mobo disk. Drivers are recongnized, and it says the device is working properly; however, no sound out the speakers. Speakers are set up properly, the mobo even detects when I plug the line in. This is frustrating.... I appreciate all you help so far though :)

Shameless bump.... I could really use some help on figuring out this sound issue. I have downloaded all the recent drivers from Asus and I am still getting nothing. Double and triple checked speaker connections and all that looks fine. Any more thoughts?

Thanks,
Ryan

Make sure that none of the mute buttons are checked for your volume control. You should be able to just double-click the speaker icon in the system tray and turn the volume sliders up and see that there are no mute buttons checked. Also, in control panel check all of the settings under "Sounds and Audio Devices." If all that looks good, try plugging the speakers into something else like a portable CD player and insure that they do indeed work properly.

You are using the line out connection for the speakers, right?

Right click desktop>Click Display Tab>Customize Desktop>In view Icons select all that you want to view.
