i need a bit of help here guys. i need to come up with a report of
as many reasons as i can as to why windows 98 is a bad choice
for my situation, and my situation is as follows. the company i
work for sells network monitoring software, and one of our
current projects is all but demanding win98 to be the OS we
install on the machines (usually we use NT, sometimes 2000).
also, our software is written in java. any specific reasons
you can give me other than just a "windows 98 blows" would
be appreciated. even better would be reasons that pertain
to java, memory management, etc...

thanks

Yes, it manages memory like a game of Jenga (the longer you play easier it is to topple.)

The FAQ say the best reasons.

BTW.... IT BLOWS! 😛

What happens with Windows 98 if you do not adjust the vcache settings and you have 768mb of ram....does it not work or does it just not see anything more than 512mb?

Blue screens, errors, instability.

As the FAQ states, Win9x/ME can see, and use, up to 2GB of RAM. Whether or not Windows actually WORKS, is something I deliberately omitted.

Actually Win-98 can see upto 3-4 gig this is known as the system arena. The system cache is what limits the ram size see this link. Text

it only uses fat32 so you cannot have the features that ntfs offers such as permissions and (in 2k) compression, encryption, etc.... Fat32 also has 2GB file size limitations, also if you have large partitions you get allot of drive slack (wasted space) whereas with ntfs you can have many more clusters so you can use the drive more efficiently.

Looks like according to this document support will be available until this time next year for Win 98... damn.

Windows 98 is about to enter the "extended" phase of MS support, meaning:
Licenses only available in the authorized OEM distribution channel and through downgrade rights available in Volume Licensing programs*.
In addition to Premier Support, paid incident support, paid hotfix support**, and online support information will be available.

So they dont provide as much support for it as they do for Me/2K and XP, however they still do provide some support for it

When I was using 98 I was married, now that I ugraded to XP Pro I am not, therefore it must be a superior operating system. 🙂

Another good reason is Microsoft is going to begin dropping all support for it after July 31... so U have less than 6 weeks
