I need QUUIET!!!!!!.....(hard drives)

Hello,
I own to HP Pavilions, (Yes, I'm an OEM tool go figure). Ever since day 1 both have created LOUD noises. I thought it was the 80mm Case and CPU fan. (Checked it out, its an Delta ASB0812HH fan that MAKES HUGE Noise). I swapped that piece of garbage and put in a nice brand new Panaflo fan in the duct. I first tried out the system with no HDD,CDROM receiving POWER! WOAH TOTAL SILENCE. My pants were jumping for joy. I decided to reconnect everything and put the system back together. Lo and Behold NOISE began, I thought "What can cause this?"

I soon figured out it's the Hard Drive (1 HP has 30gb, the other HP has 20gb, I replaced the fans of both computers)
The Hard Drives are Quantum Fireball @5400 rpm. (30 and 20 gb models)
I really dont care about what's inside these drives mostly "personal" stuff and games which can be backed up easily (important stuff is in my laptop anyhow)

But the Noise level is HORRIFIC!! I tested the HDD by taking out the IDE cable and turning on the system, it makes LOADS of Noise IDLE and while it seeks, it Clicks likes its dying but too bad it doesnt. I have 1 Western Digital 200BA (20Gb) @7200 rpm that is VERY SILENT even when writing and reading, but I need more capacity so I can just swap in EXTEREMELY quiet Hard Drives!

You guys know of any models which are QUIET and pretty Ok fast by Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, Fujitsu??? I would really prefer 7200 RPM and over 40 GB. Thanks for reading my rant, and thanks in advance for your comments.

I've read for a while that the Seagate Barracuda IV is the quietest ATA100 7200RPM drive available. Two weeks ago I had a situation that necessitated replacing my IBM 75GXP 30G w/ a Barracuda IV. It's the quietest drive I've yet to hear (or not hear, as the case may be <g> ).

Yes, I would say the Seagate Barracuda IV is the quietest drive you can find now cause of their fluid bearings.
It's not the fastest, but it is virtually silent.

I recently replaced my IBM 75GXP with a Seagate Barracuda IV, best investment I've done in a long long time! It's noticably faster than the IBM and I was totally blown away by how quiet the Barracuda is with its fluid bearings, just amazing. Even under heavy load you just can't hear it unless you put your ear to it. It's even more quiet than my Seagate U6 5400RPM which also is very silent. Fujitsu drives are also very quiet, but it's a shame they don't come in bigger sizes.
So, another vote for the Seagate Barracuda IV!

the silentdrive
i got one from Viper GTS a while back :-]
makes the hd so i cant hear it above ambient sounds (i usu. hae my window open)
now if i could just find another one for my server :-/

Try NEDComp.

They take a while to process their orders, but last time I checked they had them.

[EDIT]Just checked, they do have them @ $34.95[/EDIT]

I have problem with the Seagate Barrcuda IV 80GB which I bought from Fry's. My pc could not find this HD, Even when it found this HD I could only get 11 GB of it (I use Win98se fdisk command to configure it}. I exchanged it with new one. Samething still happen. I have use 3 different pc to configure this HD, all of them show same result.
Does anyone have any idea? My main pc is Microstar k7t turbo with RAID on. The 2nd pc is Gigabyte GA-7IXE.BTW I have no problem with Maxtor DiamondPlus 40 GB HD which I tried to replace. I am using W98se.😕

Why, why, why are you using FAT32?

Viper GTS

WOAH thanks!! 🙂
Viper GTS, Jeff, Maverick, eke; seems like the Barracuda IV is the best choice for me. I'm buying 3 of them. 1 80GB and 2 40Gb... also 2 of those Silentdrive's that Flood recommended to keep the Quantums quiet. Thanks again.

Jndogget... look for an update on your BIOS from the manufacturer. Also place the Maxtor as Master and Seagate as Slave and go in windows and check if it is present. ALSO in FDISK make sure after you made a PRIMARY partition make another EXTENDED LOGICAL partition using the 69 (hehe) left over gigabytes on the Seagate (I sometimes forget myself)

tomshardware had an article on using 2 notebook drives in a RAID 0 configuration. (expensive, but prolly very quiet)

Wurmyhi, yeah I saw that on Tom's site today. Was very interesting, but I'm NOT a RAID type of guy. I don't see the purpose unless I'm a server. (Do you really need Max Payne in 3 HDD's???) But I was amazed at the performance, but I'm a 3 1/2" type of guy.... wait that didn't sound right....

Ohh well ordered me the 3 Barracuda's and the TEAC 24x12x40 CDRW. Can't wait.... Mustplay DoD until fun time begins.

Another vote for the Barracuda IV. They are exceptionally quiet. Go for the single platter ones (20/40GB) instead of the double platter ones (60/80GB) since they are a little more quiet and generate lesser heat.

Hmmm? Sorry I am not understand what you mean.

KGB, I did try to configure it to 2 drives. But it didnot work. I still got only 11GB. Then I try to use Disk Manager which come with HD. It even worse. I only got 8.5 GB. When I rebooted the DM couldnot find the HD. Finally I returned the HD to Fry's. IMHO I'm very unhappy with Seagate. BTW both HD were made in Singapore. The Date are "020201" & "022801". Both packed in kind seethru box & not vacuum sealed like other Co.(IBM, Maxtor). I'm kind thinking those could be refab. Well, Many Thanks to both of you.🙂
