That shouldn't be a significant issue with copper phone wiring. Crosstalk between the lines (if more than one is in use) and hum pickup can be a huge issue, though. Those issues can be solved cheaply and easily by using CAT5 for premises wiring.

compared to the thousands of feet of wire already running
to your house and through it.


 
or just use those little connectors that aloow you to string together several runs of cable
100 ft connector to another 100 ft
repeat as needed

And do you know how many repeaters and distribution boxes those signals go through before they get to your property? There's a reason that cabling such as cat 5 is limmited in distance without repeating... I'm no expert, but I'd imagine that phone would be similar.
