I want to hook up 2-3 computers and do printer, internet, and lan gaming. These will be on different OSes possibly, and I want to know if I need a switch or a hub??

What will each do for me? I was looking at hardware yesterday, and some kits come with switches and some come with hubs. What is best for me?

I'll be using dial up networking for now, cable later, and 2-3 systems in a server/workstation setup.

Thanks,

Inosuke

With just 2-3 computers you really won't see much performance difference between a 10/100 Hub or a 10/100 Switch under normal use. A switch does give you better throughput however and there really isn't a huge difference in price anymore.

Personally I'd go with the switch, down the road I think you'd be happier especially if you end up putting more PC's on.

Both a switch and a hub will do in your situation... However a switch will be better for large networks (maybe LAN parties in the future), so I would suggest going with a switch...

OOOOOoooo laaannn parties.....

A switch it is. Also recommendations for kits? I hear netgear is better than linksys. Want to use this with 2000/98/and Linux.

Thanks,

Inosuke
