I just got a set of tires for my 2002 Civic. 185-65-15. BFG Traction T/A/ Bought them at Costco for ~$75 installed. They were running a special $60 off a set of 4 so they ended up costing $240 + tax for the set (installed). I was told that they run those specials regularly so if you can wait until you are at 2/32" it might be worth it. Make sure they are the proper speed rating. I had a hard time finding 185-65-15's in H speed rating. I probably could have gotten 195-60-15's but I wasn't sure how those would ride on the Civic. The BFG Traction T/A's are a directional tire so you can't cross rotate them.
Better tires make a big difference, especially if you live in an area that gets more rain and/or snow. Cheap tires like most new cars come with stock usually suck. They're everything your vehicle is riding on, after all (no pun intended).
agreed. HUGE difference in dry, wet and snow/sleet conditions.
for example - my summer tires are great on dry, but I'm not going anywhere if there is a hint of snow on the ground.
on the Miata, I have some Bridgestone Potenza RE950s...they've done well in the 8 months that I've had the car. I would recommend AGAINST the Michelin OE tires that Honda likes to put on their cars. The ones that came with my '99 Accord was crap (hydroplaned coming off an exit), and I got some Yokohamas at Discount Tires that had way better wet traction and were $70 cheaper per tire. I'm currently running Falken ZE-512, which have been a good compromise on ride/handling, since it is a high performance all-season tire.
I've always heard good things about the Kumho Ecsta ASX (I think that's what they're called). I'm planning to put those on my car before next winter rolls around.
I just went to TireRack.com to see how much new tires for my car would be.

I have found that certain tires are less noisey. That may or may not be of concern to you though.

I'd gladly buy OE tires for my car if they're available. It depends on what came on your car. According to tirerack, I have Continental Ultra High Performance tires and they are outstanding.
Some people with the same car got other tires and have had a problem with the tread not lasting. Just depends.

I had Bridgestone RE92 (IIRC) on our Maxima and those tires sucked in the rain. I'm running Michelin Pilot Sports now and they are much much better...expensive as hell though.
Falken ZE512 FTW.

Do your research, and you won't find a better tire, I LOVE these on my 92 Caddy Eldorado.

another vote for Falken ze512s. bought mine from edgeracing as well.
they are an all-season tire with great traction. I use it on my Sentra SE-R SpecV. Did some homework before I ordered and went with these. also liked the fact I got little road noise with them.

When my ex's sister was looking to buy an accord of your year we went and test drove a few. One had cheap new tires and the other had a good se t of tires and the diff is night and day.
Remember when buying a set of tires that they not only provide you with traction but a bad set can also lengthen the time it will take for your car to stop. The car with the crappy tires handled like crap and couldnt take corners very well where the other one with good tires whipped around corners like it was nothing. Both had the same stock size tires and she learned a lesson that day on tires as well as how to haggle with the dealership.

One thing to note:
You need to wear off the sheen that they put on the tires to preserve them when they're new before you get good traction.
<-- had fun with a left rear with 7000 miles and a brand new tire on the right rear. The LSD got a bit of a work out
