My Dell 9300 is coming in monday hopefully. Now i need me a wireless router,

i wanted to get this bundle

D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-926
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127150

or

Netgear's WGTB511T
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product....T=Network+Wireless+Rou&CMP=OTC-17exta6

or just go with a a diffrent one. I've heard good and bad things about both. Maybe i can get a more detailed review on them. This will be my first laptop and wireless connection.

Is it better to get them as 2 diffrent items?

Personally I would go with Netgear over D-Link. I've never liked D-Link, their quality has always been subpar to me. I haven't used them since the 802.11b days (for good reason), so their quality may have changed. But the way I see it: why risk it when you know something else will work just fine?

Unless you're doing large wireless file transfers btwn computers or have a frickin' T1, you don't really need 108mbps IMO. Otherwise just watch the retail stores, they run sales on these items frequently.

the d-link stuff .. IMO.. has a bad user interface, it can be confusing to navigate, with buttons appearing both on the side and across the top, it doesn't take much to wonder which of the 5 "tools" menu's you're actually in at the moment.

i did read/skim thru ezlan.net thats where i got the d-link bundle from. He suggested that one. the buffalo is too much for me. I read things and i dont understand untill i get the hardware and try it myslef. thats how i work. when i have to learn it, i pick up the info quicker then when i don't, like right now i have no clue what security i should put up.

I'm not going to be transfer large files or anything like that. but i would like to use the 108mbps becuase i wanted to go wireless gaming more or less. i don't want to be held down with wires. but i might just get a 54mbps and when i do gaming just bring it to my router and plug in a cable.

if i do run 54mbps. there would be no point in me getting a kit then would it. since mines comes with a intel something a/b/g 54mbps built in. Only thing i would be worried about is will it be compatible issues. since my friend's sony laptop had a built in one as well and it didn't pick up his linksys router.

Well, if you can get a cheapie and return it, try it out. Otherwise, go with a safe brand. Wireless can become a big headache and if you can't get online (I've had wired connections go out as well), imagine how much you'll be cursing yourself 🙂

i really think linksys has the best user interface so that would be my number one choose

my roommate and i are using a d-link one right now and it's pretty damn good IMO. cheap and works well and strong enough signal for us. the interface was also very easy to use and quick to set up different port forwards

SMC makes THE BEST routers I've dealt with. Got the top-of-the-line from newegg for $80, haven't had to reset it ONCE.

is the SMC one good for file transfering. i'll be sending back and forth 5gb files.

what should i look at to see if they have good file transfering?

Well, Gigabit is what you'll want for large file transferring... you can't get that over wireless though. I think the fastest you can get over wireless currently is 140MBPS.

well when it comes to file transfers i'll just plug in the cord and run a wired connection.

So will that SMC router be good for file transfering?

DONT GET DLINK, i have dlink, and have had nothing but troubles, i have to run a cable down from my computer through my house just to get online sometimes, even on the computer 10 feet away the connection gets lost.

Been using netgear for years now, good product and easy to use. As for gaming, wireless will be no problem, I am running 11Mb and it adds about 10ms over what I am cabled, that for me is not a problem. As far as file transfers, the 54 would get the job done, the 108 would be nice, but you would be better off with a usb2\firewire external drive imo, lil extra for the purchase would save you hours and hours if you transfer files alot.

Linksys (made by Cisco) just made Editor's Choice in PC Mag. Yesterday at BestBuy! there were 108s by D-Link, NetGear, and Linksys - all at the 54 and 108 level for sale on the shelves.

I'm in the market also - look for one that is Wi-Fi certified.

belkin has been on sale (54G) just about every week at one or the other superstores-9.99 to 14.99 after rebates. comes with a lifetime warranty. have bought two of them, one to replace an 11b router, and they work fine.

yea i'm a little iffy with belkin. i know they are a good name but they just started to make routers right? so yea.
