I want to buy a new PC, but i'm a fool on hardware questions. i need a Computer to play and to watch movies on my TV screen. I do now that i want a AMD processor, please let me know your ideas of configurating a new Pc ...... One of my first ideas was

AMD Thunderbird 800
ASUS A7V
256mb SDRAM 133
IBM 30 GB 7200 rpm

I don't know more, just that i need a card that also has a TV out.

WEll just let me know your opinions, thx

Marco

You might want to look at either a Pioneer 16/40 DVD drive or the Toshiba 12x DVD drive, the Toshiba is, by all accounts so far, quieter so you may like it more if you're going to be playing movies with it.

EDIT: You'll probably need a sound card that supports 5.1 output as well if you have a 5.1 speaker setup, look at either the Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 line of cards, or wait for reviews on the new Phillips Acoustic Edge sound card.

I don't know too much about the motherboard or processor as I haven't had any experience with AMD setups yet, but from what everybody else on the board says it looks like a good choice. The IBM HDD is great as well and you've got a good amount of RAM in, you shouldn't have any problems for what you want to do with it.

The Radeon Vivo and Toshiba 16/40 is a very good combo, Radeon in my opinion looks better in DVD's, my girlfriend has 1 in her comp and I compared it with my GeForce 2 GTS and you can see that the Radeon provides better DVD Quality.

As for the T-Bird an 800 is more than enough, try to get a blue core Bird so you can OC to a gig if you need it, I OC'ed my friends 800 to 1.1 Gigs, so hehe.

Peace,
Nore

I take it you don't want to overclock, right? Well, if price is any issue, I'd definitively go for a Duron 800. It's cheaper and most likely you won't notice a difference when playing a game.

Besides that, yeah, seems like a fine system. Alternatively to the ASUS board, you could also go for the Abit KT7 or the MSI K7T Pro2 (if you're not o/cing the Pro without 2 is fine, too). RAM is allright, the HD is not exactly large by todays standards, but upgrading HDs isn't a problem anyways.

What do you mean with blue core, do i have to say that too if i buy it? I want to update it somehow sometime, is that possible on AMD thunderbird?

T-Bird 950
ASUS A7V Rev. 1.04
256 MB Crucial PC 133
Kenwood True-X 72X
Sound Blaster Live Platinum
30gb 75XGP ATA 100 IBM HD
CL Annihilator 2 GeForce GTS
V2 SLI
Etc.

HEy Nore, how much would that design cost? i don't need a modem i already got one, and a soundcard is not really nessesary now.

thx

blue core refers to the color of the cpu core...blue means it has copper interconnects and those are rumored to be better overclockers, I say rumored because I have yet to try one. 🙂

You can't choose the core, whatever the store sends you is what you get, the Blue core Birds are the new ones that can OC higher and are mostly put in the 1.0-1.2 Gig Proc. The green cores are the old cores that can OC but not as high as the blue, the Green core is used mostly in the 1 gig and down proc. My friend and I were lucky cause we both got blue cores, I oc'ed his 800 Bird to 1.1 using Artic Silver and the GlobalWin FOP-32, I'm going to OC mine soon to about 1.2-1.4 (I'll try), hehe. Hope that helps.

PS: the only way you can choose the core is if you buy the chip opened or from somebody on the board, but if it's retail you'll have a 35/65 chance to get one if you buy a proc. less than a gig

T-Bird 950 - $250
ASUS A7V Rev. 1.04 - $150
256 MB Crucial PC 133 - $280
Kenwood True-X 72X - $100-120
Sound Blaster Live Platinum - $200
30gb 75XGP ATA 100 IBM HD - $175-200
CL Annihilator 2 GeForce GTS - $250
V2 SLI - $80
DTT 2500 - $250
and Mouse and Keyboard, Floppy, etc.
