I can't get any sound on my computer.

I have installed, uninstalled, re-installed, and uninstalled the update on the realtek audio driver and still can't get sound out of my speakers or my headphones. I have restarted my computer twice as well.

My mobo is Asus M5 A97 R2.0. It is registering that there is something plugged into the port but no sound is coming out and they front headphone jack it isn't registering.

Did you check the properties section of your sound to see if you are using the realtek driver. Also make sure you check the realtek program to see if you have set the cables correctly. And make sure nothing is muted.

I've had 2 realtek soundcards crap out on me (both HP/Compaq systems which were otherwise excellent systems). If you want to verify it's a hardware problem, boot up a live Linux disc like Ubuntu (you don't have to install it) and see if the sound works. If not, time to buy a internal soundcard or USB sound device.

On system 1, the initial problem was that it seemed like sound should be playing (could see green in the sound mixer) but did not, and a few days later it would simply say "device not plugged in".

On System 2, the sound actually still works but the volume is so low to be nearly inaudible (can't hear w/o headphones and even then - just barely). Randomly the sound will work correctly on reboot, but put the system to sleep and then wake up again and it usually fails. Can't put up w/ that so I just used a spare card I had

Have you checked to see if the onboard sound is turned on in the BIOS? The onboard sound can be enabled or disabled in the BIOS so you can add a dedicated sound card.

Right. often a computer has more than one sound driver. You need to investigate as above.

Do you have the front audio hooked up properly? There are 2 types of audio header that are not compatible.

Maybe just disconnect the front on the chance that the front interferes with the back.

Sometimes headphones will cause your speakers to cut out (on purpose).

Correct audio out selected? On one of my systems one must right click on the volume control, click on Playback Devices, and choose between HDMI or speakers...
