I need help

I have 2x NETGEAR FA133 adapters installed in 2 different PC's.. I have 2 patch male/male cat5e cables and a linksys router. I have both the PC's connected to the router and the uplink connected in the uplink slot.. I can get connection on one of my PC's AKA my main one, but on the one in the living room it only lights up half the monitors.

In General you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

What do you mean only lights up half the monitors?

the two monitor things that show connectivity only one of them lights up, but all the lights on the router are fine.,

Check the adapter on the living room computer by following Jack's links, also verify that the cable is good.

To Genesis 15,

I see you followed the concensus advice and bought a router. Rather than be a total jerk and say ha ha I told you so, I must instead honestly tell you that there is almost certainly something wrong with your living room computer and if you went crossover cable and ICS, you probably would be in the exactly the same boat.

But you are in troubleshooting mode now, I looked at the links, and you are getting some great advice. A large number of things could cause this limited connectivity, and you should follow each step, step by agonising slow step, until you find the cause or causes.

Its even possible that some of your new hardware is defective----if you have a friend with a laptop computer, it might be good to see if you can add it to your network---which could do alot to show certain pieces of hardware are known good if the lap top connects. On the bright side, you will get a good education in the process.

And if, at the end of the rainbow, it turns out to be a corrupt winsock, I will point out that is often due to malware getting onto the computer.---still not worried about computer security?

how can it be this difficult to setup a network? I have 2 PC's...

I just dropped a brand new NetGear adapter into it bought from staples and it reads it.. the hardware is fine... I'm running 2 CAT5e patch cables.. and I have the NEW Linksys router. I have a 7ft cat5e going to my PC into slot #2, then I have the 25ft cat5e going from slot #1 to my moms PC in the living room. Then I have a cat5e going from the modem to the Uplink slot on the router. I cant seem to configure the connection I try to setup the network and it says it can't complete setup.
