I am tring to install windows 98 on this pc I have. The problem is after I put the 98 boot disk in and it does its thing I replace that disk with the 98 cd I do have ,but it wont run I tried setup, install, run etc.

every time I go to switch the drive ex. CD d:\SETUP.EXE
I get a message saying drive a is right protected? Im not even using the A drive

or I get abort, retry, failed which I say retry and evently it says invaild drive and then crashes?

Any suggestion on how to get this operational?

Welcome to the Forums 🙂 How about booting straight from your CD-ROM drive and leaving the floppy out of the procedure completely? Many PCs have the ability to boot from the CD-ROM drive; you may need to go into the BIOS menu and set the boot-device priority so that the CD-ROM drive is the first thing that the system tries.

edit: if that wasn't quite clear, I mean boot from the actual Win98 CD itself.

thanks for responding... I actually tried that because it doesnt have a floppy just a cd rom and it says invalid system disk
when its a pure copy of 98 not burned. yeah i set the bios up to just boot from the cd the only thing i was able to get to work is the
boot disk which was burnt on a cd.

I also noticed after the boot disk was put on and i restarted it found the C: but only my command.com file is there
should there be other files like config.sys ?

You bumped pretty soon, less than 20 minutes
well anyways, try the "Start the computer with CD ROM support" option
and then try to access your CDROM, and run windows setup from there

yeah I know im at work getting ready to leave soon....

I was able to do that already with the boot up disk and when the boot up disk comes to the A: prompt
I put the windows cd in and I cant get it to run.

I know try to leave the 98 cd in and reboot ...did that too and it just goes to a C: with just command.com
in as a file nothing else and will not access the cd rom

Are the cdrom drivers on the floppy you're using to bootup? I know that win98 requires some extra driver files to boot up with the cdrom option enabled.
I'm guessing you know what dos commands to use to get to the cdrom.
