Welcome to the Team
I think you may have your hard drive set to spin down after inactivity. This can wreak havoc with Seti! Also, are you using the graphical client (screensaver) or the command line client? The command line client can be up to 50% faster in some cases! :Q Follow the links in our signatures for more info, and help on how to set it up
(following is cut and pasted from my post another thread a couple of days ago as you've asked same question

)
The speed of the work unit can depend on many things. The most important is the speed of your processor, cache size on the processor and also the speed of your RAM. Seti loves big caches (1mb is preferable, because the client is about 700k and therefore it can all fit into 1mb of cache without having to go to your RAM), fast FSB and RAM speed if you have less than 1mb cache and also CPU speed will come into effect if the others are constant.
Also something that affects the speed of a Work Unit is the Angle Range. The average angle range of a WU is 0.417. The higher the AR, the quicker the WU will tend to be, and the lower the AR the slower it will tend to be on a Windows machine. The HAR and LAR should both be a bit quicker, because there is less data to analyse, but for some reason the LAR (sometimes called VLAR, very low angle range) takes much longer on a Windows 9x machine. The hit on a Windows NT based machine, as well as a Linux based machine is less.
I hope this clears things up a little
