I'm just getting started with the whole Seti deal. I've been signed up with seti for quite a while now but have only recently had interest in donating computer time. Can someone show me how to roll my current account into the anandtech seti team? I just bought an Athlon XP1600+ and it dose 166mhz+ fsb(1800mhz:D). I'm currently having it un locked by someone, so once I get that puppy in my MSI KT3 Ultra 2 with Crosair 3200, I'll be pumping out work units with the best of them :). Thanks guy's.

Okay here is what you need to do:

1) Get your Seti account password here
2) Once they email you the password (if your Seti email address is a hotmail account then look for it in the junk mail folder) you need to go here
3) You can check out the TeAm stats here
4) Watch for your official welcome thread :)

:p, glad to hear it :). One question though, is it normal for some work units to take longer than others?

It is normal for WUs that are called VLAR (Very low angle range) to take longer than others. How big a difference are you seeing?

One took me about 17hrs and the one I'm doing right now is 87% done and it's only been about 6hrs, is that normal?

What os are you running? If you're running 2000 or xp it should be quicker than that with a 1600xp unless you're running the screensaver version instand of the cli. version

XP, I'm not using the 1600+ right now, only an athlon mp at 1100mhz with a 166mhz front side bus. The 1600+ is being unlocked right now.

My 1 gig thunderbird takes around 5 1/2 hours per wu running xp and 133 fsb do you have your hd set to never turn off and screensaver set to none?

Welcome to the Team :D

I think you may have your hard drive set to spin down after inactivity. This can wreak havoc with Seti! Also, are you using the graphical client (screensaver) or the command line client? The command line client can be up to 50% faster in some cases! :Q Follow the links in our signatures for more info, and help on how to set it up :)

(following is cut and pasted from my post another thread a couple of days ago as you've asked same question ;))

The speed of the work unit can depend on many things. The most important is the speed of your processor, cache size on the processor and also the speed of your RAM. Seti loves big caches (1mb is preferable, because the client is about 700k and therefore it can all fit into 1mb of cache without having to go to your RAM), fast FSB and RAM speed if you have less than 1mb cache and also CPU speed will come into effect if the others are constant.

Also something that affects the speed of a Work Unit is the Angle Range. The average angle range of a WU is 0.417. The higher the AR, the quicker the WU will tend to be, and the lower the AR the slower it will tend to be on a Windows machine. The HAR and LAR should both be a bit quicker, because there is less data to analyse, but for some reason the LAR (sometimes called VLAR, very low angle range) takes much longer on a Windows 9x machine. The hit on a Windows NT based machine, as well as a Linux based machine is less.

I hope this clears things up a little :)

And if you still have any problems, you will see that you will get a very quick response here :D

I am using the graphical one, but I never have it open, each unit is taking just a little over 5 hr's now so I think that's pretty good. I'm running a 166mhz fsb(DDR 333) right now with very low cas settings so this computer is still quite fast at the moment. I guess the next step will be the command line client, how exactly do I get that software?

Ok I'm pretty sure I found the command line client, is the software in Crazee's "TeAm SETI" sig link what I'm suppose to be running? If so then I'm set :). Thanks for all the help guy's.

Yeah the software in Crazee's link is what you need, SETI Driver and the Seti CLI (setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe) :)

You may wish to use any of the queues listed in this thread to spread the load off of OrangeKid's single proxy :)
