I need help in setting up my router. I already have a network up: 2 pc's sharing a single @Home cable connection. I have file and print sharing set up. One machine is running Win2k, the other dual boot Win2k/Win98SE.

I also have TCP/IP, IPX/SPX/Netbios Compatible Transport Protocol, and Netbios installed.

The programs that I mostly use are Counter-Strike, Napster, AIM, Download Accelerator, and NHL2K1 (which is why I have IPX/SPX installed. And of course RC5:)

Now what I need to know is what filters should I set up and how to set them up so as not to interfere with my programs.

Remember that I don't know jack sh!t when it comes to filters. Oh, and another question. If I don't have any filters on my router, can Zonealarm protect my network, because that's what I have installed now.

Thanks,
Pyxis

This sucks. I tried setting up a simple firewall like Netgear says to do in their documents and it doesn't work. I can't connect to internet:(

I know most of the people here are more experienced than I am so any help would be appreciated. I just need to know some settings to keep people from accessing my router from the outside.

Thanks,
Pyxis

Well, filters can be a mixed bag. Here is a good site that will help you setup filters that will help make your router appear "stealth":

Here is a forum where you can ask more questions:

The biggest thing is the new firmware 3.25. It allows port mapping instead of just specific ports to be forwarded. DON'T upgrade to it unless you know what you're doing. If you aren't very sure of putting in these kinds of filters, DON'T. Its not difficult to take them out, but just follow them step by step and you'll be fine.

After you are done with them, run a port scanner from vulnerabilities.org. It'll tell you what is open and what should be fixed a bit.
