This one is for another relative. He wants to be able to play some of the newer games but still needs to occasionally do 2D work with clear text at no more than 1152x864 resolution.
I need to keep the price reasonable so I've tried to stick with a motherboard based on the KT133A chipset. Both the ASUS A7V133 and the Iwill KK266 are going in the $124-$134 price range although the Iwill has decent on-board sound.
I know the story about the 100/133 FSB jumper as presented in AnandTech's feature article May 20th. We'll simply select a cpu that has considerable underclocking range without the need to cut bridges.
I doubt we'll need more than a 1GHz cpu. We may even go lighter if we need to swing more money towards the video card. Last we'll need to pick out a nice 19" monitor. I've heard that 2 brands stand out in the budget but still good range-KDE and Samsung. Almost forgot, we'll need a nice DVD, preferably a slot variety. Why? If all else is equal, it's just cooler.
