6 I'm repairing an hp computer for a friend.

I reinstalled Windows 2000 and all went well ... I even installed Office and Norton Antivirus without any problems ...
When it came to installing the modem (56k) ... Windows asked to reboot ... so i did and now at startup ... it's extremely slow ... it takes me around 20 mins just to see my desktop ... 🙁

IT's an HP with a celeron 466
192MB RAM
20 GIG Maxtor Hard Drive
Conextant 56K Modem
NIC
Intel i810 chipset
100W PSU

Please help me
ps ... i even took out the modem and the nic ...
 
update ...

when I finally got into windows ... i immediatly went into the Task Manager ... and the CPU was at 100%
I checked the processes and System Idle process was at 0 ... and System was 100%
normally isn't it the other way around ?

anyways ... I thought that might help ...
Ill wait till i get a reply before doing anything stupid

It sounds like the Norton was doing a disk scan or something... was the HD light on during the wait?

what process was showing the 100% usage?
 
The system process ...
and no there was no hd activity at all ...
it system boots up fine until it gets into windows ... it jams when it says windows is starting up ...
I never got this prob before

ps ... i did install 128MB of RAM before i installed windows ... and all of the software ... so i ruled that out ...
I took out the modem and NIC so i ruled these out ... I think it might be a windows related problem ...
I'm gonna check the RAM maybe that might be it ...
The HD seems to be working fine during boot up ... so i don'T think that's the problem ...
what's left ...
intel chipset ... i don't think that's the prob ...
??

Just as you checked to verify the CPU usage was 100% and just like
you verified the system idle process was 0%, look and see which of the other
listed processes shows the usage. You might be able to get better help
with this information posted.
 
I did post it ....


"System Idle Process " is at 0%
"System" is at 100% and 250kb (running in safe mode now)
the rest is at 0%

If it is showing CPU at 100% and every system process at 0%, that's a no-brainer....

Your OS install is ferked......... You need a fresh install (all updates/service packs)
 
Well have you tried uninstalling the modem. Seeing how the problems started there that should be the first thing you do. You may have some irq conflict. Or a conflict between the com ports and the modem.
 
I really don't want to reinstall ... considering i didn't do anything wrong in the first place ...
anyways ... i don't think i have a choice ...
but i know im not gonna install win2k anymore ...
My only other option is WinXP Home !!!!
i heard bad things about this os ... but like i said ... i don't have another choice

Well I installed XP Home ... and I don't see any problems with that os ...
The only probs now is that my monitor blew up and XP doesn't recognise the 56k modem... not even in the device manager 🙁

But i just bought a Dell P991 for 219$ Canadian !!!

 
Ok I don't think Win2k was the cause of the problem. Did you do a format and completely fresh install of Win2k in the first place? I doubt it, and this is the cause of many problems. People think they can pop in the Windows cd, do a quick install, and fix their problems. The reality is that unless you START with a clean system, no amount of troubleshooting after that is going to fix the probability of Windows corruption.

I just went through this with a customer of mine who didn't want me to take the extra 30 minutes required to do a fresh install as I suggested. She decided on advice from a friend simply to reinstall Win2k on top of itself. Her problems got worse. She called me back, and now is paying for me to completely format and install her OS and applications from scratch. Right now the system has been running fro 2 days without a single issue. I am going to charge her more than I would if she had listened in the first place because I had to make the extra trip out to her office and bring the system home with me. Taking shortcuts doesn't pay. No offense, but it sounds like you are inexperienced in fixing computers.

That monitor rocks, what do you use it at, mines 1600x1200 @85Hz, love it.

Don't blame Win 2k, just try a fresh install (not the ncest thing, but worthwhile).
I did a dual boot with XP but didn't like it too much, don't blame 2k for something going wrong.
Plus XP might not be too great on that system, 2k woul dprobably run a bit smoother.

Sometimes if you do a bad driver install it can cause a problem, even if you don't think you've done anything wrong.
 
What makes you think that I didn't do a fresh install ...
cuz i did ...
I know that it isn't good to upgrade ...
