I need help!!! my cpu running really hot

I just got rampage iv extreme and a 3820. i use the intel stock air cooler and the temp is went to 70C. Right off the bat i turn my system off and unplug the extra cpu voltage pin and restart. and now it runs around 54C.

my prev rig is a phenom II x4 945 and the cpu temp is 19C.

can anyone tell me is 54C normal? and can anyone refer me to a good after market cooler?

i do test bench style i don't have a case.

Is that 54 load or idle? If full load, that's just fine for the stock cooler (quite good, actually). If idle, that's pretty high...check to make sure the HSF is mounted properly.

These chips are in spec into the 90s C, though I wouldn't want to run it there. On the stock cooler, load temps in the 70s are just fine.

re seat your stock cooler.

if you want an after market cooler, get a HYPER 212+

I don't think 54 is bad for a stock cooler. Not at all.

Try re-seating.

and what is a good thermal paste? and why rampage extrreme iv is not compatable with the stock cooler? my stock cooler is "sitting" on top of my cpu. is not nailed. The nail hole doesn't match.


is hype 212 plus the BEST after market cooler? is there any better "air" after market cooler out there that can fit rampage iv extreme? or is there any under 100usd good water cooling block?

No sense in buying a really pricey thermal paste with a stock cooler. Any well-known brand is fine. The bigger thing is to clean off any old paste with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, then make sure the cooler is snapped into place.

normally u only need 4 pin power for cpu. but in rampage extreme 4's case u got 8 pin + 4 pin a total of 12 pin.
but it will still work if you unplug the other 8 pin.

Exactly. I just used the thermal paste that came with my CM Hyper 212+ and it's working great.

One of the best priced and performing heatsink/fan's around!

Your holes should line up if you're using a retail CPU for your motherboard. Each motherboards holes are based on the socket type, and your CPU obviously has to match that socket type. Obviously, you need to seat your heatsink and push the pins all the way through the holes. Once they're lined up and partially in, push the pins in to lock it in place. Your temps will drop at least 20C. If you aren't going to overclock, you really don't need anything but the stock heatsink...it's designed to manage the thermal load of the processor. It's those of us who push the limits a little further (most much more than I do). who need aftermarket cooling.

I didn't mean any offense, but, well, you did turn your computer on without actually MOUNTING your heatsink, and then you wondered why it was warm....so I didn't know if you were an experienced overclocker...especially since you started with the retail HSF.

That doesn't explain why you got different temps with the extra power plug unplugged.

The CPU only draws as much power as it should when running at a certain freq and voltage.

If you didn't change the freq or voltage, then providing an additional supply of power shouldn't matter.
