I need help locating the correct video codec...

I hope this is kosher, so here goes.... I've downloaded (gasp!) a video file from the internet, a video I've already paid to see, and will not pay to see again till it is released on another medium. I would like to peruse a couple parts of the video at my own leisure, but it's not a life-threating thing if I don't, so it's not a big deal. (No, it's not pron.)

When I try to play this mpg file, it can't find the right codec. I've installed the DivX 5.0 codec, but no dice. The mpg still won't play. What are the most popular codecs used today and where can I try getting new codecs?

mpeg2. Try using your DVD player software if you have one on your comp.

Do you have a DVD player installed?
No I do not, but I have a program on a CD somewhere that came with my DVD burner.

Install it and you should be able to play the file.
