I need help IDing a tree (No pictures)

I'm trying to find the name of a tree that grows in the Louisiana/Texas area. They grow fairly large and have a light colored bark with long red thorns growing all over them.

We always called them thorn trees as kids.

Anyone have any idea what the actual name of this tree is?

It's a hugging tree.

If that's what he's talking about they're all over. Mainly found in old fence lines, the wood is as hard as a rock.

I doubt it's what he's talking about or he would have mentioned the oranges. I sure don't remember the thorns, but I sure do remember those nasty things 🙂

It didn't have those.

The thorns were about 6 inches long, IIRC.
