okay...i got my 1.2 t-bird and msi k7t turbo system running last friday without a hitch. on sunday, i was putting in a new ide cable when the system died. i was wearing a wrist strap, turned the power switch off in the back, but didn't unplug the power cable. aftering installing the new cable, it wouldn't boot up. i checked the connections(they were correct) and still nothing. at the time i was thinking it was the ps.
so yesterday i went to compusa and picked up a generic 300 watt atx ps...it still didn't work. while i was yelling at my box, i noticed a jumper lying in the case...it was the cmos jumper. i dont know when it came off or how. anyways, i put the jumper on the 2 and 3 pins for about 10 seconds then moved it back to 1 and 2. this time the system booted, but when i turned it off and powered it up again nothing. at that point it would power on about 20% of the time, but wouldn't post, and i was getting 4 red leds. i tried taking the board out of the case, and only booting with ram, chip, and video card. also, the more cards i connected to the board the less likely it would power up.
thinking it might be the mobo, today i borrowed a friends new iwill kk266. it continued to boot up about 20% of the time, but it would shut off after a few seconds.
so it's not the motherboard, but i'm not sure if it's the cpu or the power supply. i read on amd's web site that amd approved ps are REQUIRED, but i don't think the ps i got at compusa is approved by amd. i couldn't get the compusa ps to run at all with the msi board, but the ps that came with my enlight would run, but i just couldn't post and got the four red leds. on the iwill, the enlight ps wouldn't run but the compusa ps would for a few seconds then shut off.
so what does this sound like...the cpu or the ps?
if it's the cpu, does it sound like i will be able to return it for another?
oh btw, it was running between 42 and 50 celsius and i'm using thermal tape(which i noticed was stripped off pretty bad when i reseated the processor)
thx
