What is the best thing to use for cleaning the screen? I sneezed and some stuff got on my monitor. So I took a tissue and wiped the screen which is what I normally do, and most of the time my screen will be fine. However, now I have a problem. I wiped my screen and there is this really thin steak (that looks rainbow colored) that I can't get rid of. I even tried smudging it with my finger to see if I could smudge it, but nothing changed. Please don't tell me it's a scratch, but I don't understand how it could be if it is. I used a clean tissue and nothing was scratching when I wiped the monitor. So what can I do? What's the best way to clean a monitor screen?

no you dont want to use windex, you can use water or special screen cleaners.

White Vinegar and Lint free cloth (paper towel if you have to).

And see this thread

Quote linked thread:
And the winner is...... Straight Vineager with a half of box of Kleenex. My monitor is absolutely perfect now thanks to thorin.
Now I'd defiantely say use something other then Kleenex but you get the idea......

Just breath on the screen and wipe it off with a soft toilet paper. Repeat that a few times until all dirt is gone. Works great with dust too.

Oh, and I forgot to say... You can even do it with your monitor turned on. The glow on the screen makes it easier to spot the dirty spots.

I favor Endust for Electronics. Its in a spray can and easy to apply. I have been using it on my CRTs and laptops for years.

what they said... Just don't directly apply any cleaner (diluted vinegar or water) directly on the monitor. Moisten the cleaning cloth then clean.

That rainbow streak you see is most likely oil. Oil from your hand will have the same effect. Smudging with your fingers is just adding more oil and salt which can corrode the UV film on the newer screens. btw I just use water and a soft premium paper towel like Brawny. Works everytime for me on over 20+ different kinds of high quality monitors. If I am being really meticulous, I will create a white screen to check for any oil spots or streaks.

With the Endust stuff I have been spraying it right onto the screen. I have done this with a bunch of different types of monitors and LCDs on laptops for probably 4 or 5 years (whenever they came out with the stuff and/or I found it). Its really convenient.

Moisten Screen with tissue dampened with cold water and wipe clean with a soft lent free cotton cloth... And use a Feather Duster every day to keep it dust free and looking nice and new.

Used windex for the past ten years on different monitors and never had a problem.

I use Lens Cleaner that I get from Wal Mart in their Vision Center for 3$. It says "Safe for Anti-Reflective Coatings". If it's good enough for eyeglasses, it's good enough for monitors. I've used this for years on my glasses with the AR coating, and have never noticed a problem. Been using it on my monitor for a year now with no problems. Whatever you do DO NOT USE WINDEX!!!! It'll ruin the coating on the monitor screen.

big reason that I never use windex is because it tends to strip off the antiglare film on the screen. Atleast thats what I was told years ago!
