Ok, hear is the deal. I love listening to music. I'm a music major so this goes hand in hand with everyday life. Well, two days ago I heard a reissue of Miles Davis "In a Silent Way" on LP at a friend of a friend's house. It had been a long time since I've heard anything on LP so it came as quite a shock. I couldn't believe the sound. It was more organic in texture, the bass was so, well, acoustic sounding. Truly amazing. So now I'm hooked. I have to get a turntable. My problem is that I know absolutely nothing about turntable's. That includes cartridges, amps, whatever. Can someone point me in a direction to either learn about this stuff or just point me towards a good player. I don't want to spend more than $350 total. I hear some of the old players are great, so go ahead and include those, too. I'll look at auctions for those. Thanks for any help.

I recomend that you find a back copy of $ensible $ound's December issue last year(2001) either that or the January issue for this year(2002) Which ever one it is, it is the one that has the editor picks. They will recomend a turntable for your budget

cheers 🙂

Most of the people on these forums aren't old enough to even know what a turntable is. I have never been impressed by the sound reproduction of tapes or CD's. Vinyl recordings have always been, in my opinion, superior.

I suggest you use Google to educate yourself. Turntable architechtecture comes in many flavors. You have to consider the bearings, the arm, the head, the needle, the actuation controls. It depends on what you want and how much you are willing to spend.

Good luck.

Any reccomendations for a budget turntable ?
Maybe $100

I have about 400 records...

and my crappy turntable broke.

I dont know whether to get a turntable
thats geared more towards DJing (aren't they more well built?)
or just playing..

Here is my secret method to get a really great turntable and preamp, dont tell anyone. Go to your local AM or FM radio stations and talk to the chief engineer, talk him out of the ones they have stored in the back room since they went to either CD's or MP3's on a hardrive.

nothing but the best, get a technics 1200 off ebay or something. Later, you can get another one and a mixer.

<< get a Technic. those are the best. >>

That was going to be my suggestion when I first opened the thread, but Piano Man isn't mixing, he's just listening. For 350, look at Gemini tables. The table itself isn't going to make too much of a difference (within reason) but the cartridge is. Look to spend 150-200 on the cartridge itself. Thats the most important part. You won't need an amp because the table is going to plug right into your reciever.
