I need help building my firneds comp

My friend wants a new EVERYTHING(mainly gaming setup)comp..the only problem is hes dead set on intel. I need some advice for a good gaming setup. He has $1200 to spend on Mobo,RAM,CPU,PSU,case,HDD. I dont really know very much about Intel so help is appreated. Oh he will not be OCing AT ALL. Please supply links.

EDIT: sorry forgot to specify thast he wants PCIx and need LOTS of room for expantion 3+ pci slots is prefered

show him some benchmarks, that should set him straight
 
I have nothing against Intel. I do find their systems run a little more stable than my AMDs (Having owned 3 Intel and 3 AMD)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying an Intel system.

Nor is there anything wrong with buying an AMD system
 
Tell your friend if he wants a real gameing rig, and doesnt and to be laughed at building a gameing system, to go with the fugg'n chip that is preforming better in GAMES.

Right now that is , dun Dun DUNN,, AMD.
 
if he really wants an intel then he probibly wont get much out of a custum built, get onboard one of those dell deals with lcd moniter and whatever else it has.......
 
There's nothing wrong with Intel, but he needs to know that you can have a fast & stable system using a CPU from either company. I think you need to build him a nice fast A64 system to show him the light. I was also anti-AMD at one point, but one AMD rig was all it took to convince me that Intel isn't the only player in town.

Of course, if he ever has issues with it that are caused by his own doing, he will say it's because the machine is an AMD. :roll:
 
yea i've tryed to talk him into amd but no he wont.....whatever.. so if he was to build a all around good everything system what mobo and stuff like that would u sugest

ill keep trying to talk him into amd though but for the time being whats a good setup

Well I know what *I* would get, anyway...

-Asus P5AD2-E Premium mobo
-P4 3.4 or 3.6 GHz CPU (could go 3.0 or 3.2 here if you run into budget limits)
-1 GB of good DDR2 (Corsair?)
-Nothing less than an X800 level card...preferrably an X800 XT or a 6800 GT though, just as long as it's PCI-e
-For the case, why not something like an Antec Sonata? That case is quiet, fairly inexpensive, and comes with a 380w PSU if I'm not mistaken.
-How much storage space does he need? 1 or 2 200 GB SATA Seagates would be quiet and won't break the bank...and that 5 year warranty sure is nice for peace of mind.

The above will be fairly expensive to start with, but you get a fast chipset with PCI-e and DDR2 support, and the rig will be somewhat futureproof (a lot more so than with a Northwood P4 system or anything using AGP).

If you aren't going to overclock you may as well buy a Dell.

You aren't listening, without the value added by overclocking Dell is a good choice. They run awesome hot deals, you can always add more ram ect. yourself if they are gouging for anything 🙂

comes to a little over $1200, not including shipping, if monitor is needed, well good luck

only reason I put the x800, is they didn't have any PCIe 6800GT's in stock
could step down to 6800 non-ultra to drop the price by about $90
being dead set on PCIe and Intel makes things more expensive, but it's his loss
Nothing wrong with Intel really, just AMD is much better for price to performance right now.
I'd be using an A64 myself if I didn't get such a good deal on my 3.2e.
 
I also have a friend who is building a new system, who is also kinda dead set on Intel. Actually, I had the same mindset up until about 2.5 months ago when I actually started reading benchmark data. That is the key!

I showed him many P4 vs. Athlon 64 tests (specifically gaming tests) at AnandTech, Tom's Hardware, Xbitlabs, etc. Since all the tests show A64 winning, there is no reason for him to believe that the P4 would perform better.

I hope I convinced my friend... otherwise I question the reason he is buying an Intel.

BTW, I have nothing against Intel, but the tests don't lie, do they? Not to mention all the people on this board whose A64 systems would blow away a "comparable" P4 system.
 
school your friend and tell him to get off his lazy @ss and READ articles and benchmarks that compare AMD and Intel - it doesnt take a genius to read bar graphs. If he's going to spend $1200 on a system, he should at least know how it performs relative to all other options. Then, if he still thinks that Intel is better for a gaming system, then I don't know what to say except what the other guys said above......

agreed.

both amd and intel perform very well. amd is a bit better for gaming, while intel is more application oriented. you really cant go wrong with either and the more they compete, the lower their prices will be for us, the end-user.
 
if he is dead set on intel get a pentium M desktop system and overclock the little ah heck a little bit. those benchmarks are impressive in blackinches' opinion. not to mention the face you can build an almost silent computer. but you wouldn't get pcie-e.
