hey man BFG 6800 GT's are going for $399 at best buy, so you either have a rip off or the wrong card in that auction.

The only thing I see wrong is the Power Supply. Your first choice is underpowered. It would probably run that system just fine, but you would have little if any headroom. Add another card, a drive, more RAM and you're underpowered. Spend a little more now and you're covered for the future.

That second Power Supply is too cheap. Stay away from it.

You're building a first class rig here. Don't cripple it with a second class Power Supply. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Here are some suggestions.

Enermax

Antec

Fortron

The range here is from 400 to 470 watts. Another thing to keep in mind is that more fans = more noise.

Fortron seems nice, its the cheapest. You say 1st class system, I say budget constraints.

I CAN change the power supply, but a change in the 800 dollars of video cards seems to be a need. Unless I can somehow manage to buy RAM, CD/DVD Drive, OS, & a monitor 17-19'' CRT Flat Screen remember, under the budget. I have been thinking, the only way I can work around my budget, is to have a number to work from. I cant get that number until I have a system, expensive or not, as long as everything is compatible. After I have the Price of all the components, I can then start to trim down/degrade some of the components with as limited proformance drawback as possible.

I asked about the OS, being intigrated into somthing (Dell & other companies do it), that could save me money.
Buying a 17'' over a 19'' would save me money
Spending less money (I HATE to say) on a video card
The amount to trim down ANYTHING is determined on how MUCH I am overbudget, and the only way to find that OUT, is for me to select the extra parts I still need (With your help of course)

JYP--It's a Link Click on it lol. :D

For Mastrduke's question: Yes. I have been working with people here who have gotten me to a certain point thus far. A few posts back(This same page, 2 posts back) I had a list on what I am going to buy. I am considering changing my PCU to a Fortron (Posted link from boomerang). As for everything else, it seems that is what I am getting. The bottem of my post I stated a few UNKNOWNS, those must be decided over, and then if I am going over budget still, I will then degrade some components (Component degrade with lowest effect on proformance)

Inform me more on the CPU and heatsink, I have read mechBgon's tutorial (Nice tutorial, awesome job. - There is a 3MB Video under a thermal compound on an Athlon XP that doesnt work, just an FYI). Will there be detailed instructions for people even LIKE me that can understand when working with these materials? (I have a basic understanding, just somthing more indepth with the thermal GOO!)

PS: Could someone find me a CASE that has a PCU already installed in it? I know that many people have said that many case's come with one. (Most of the pictures of cases I have seen have a PCU but do not stat it in the list of components that come with the case. I am looking for a somewhat stylish case, (With a Window, and enough Wattage... Low enough for my budget as well please, im sure SOMEONE can find one). Sound card: Do I really need a 90 dollar sound card? Can this Do the Job (Link)

9+ Hours :Q

Changed the Video Card to: This (There isnt much difference from the one I had selected in my last post)

I am looking at it this way:
VC Before: 289 -- VC Now: 259 -- Save: 30 (60 Total)
Mouse Before: 50 -- Mouse Now: 30 -- Save 20 (40 Total)
MousePad: Before 30 -- MP Now: 9 (Guess, didnt select 1 yet) -- Save 21 (41 Total)
Keyboard: Before 36 -- Now: 20 --Save 16 (32 Total)
Total Savings: 173

My Mouse will be a MX-310

Note: The auction ends wednesday, and I will only be buying parts as soon as I know the buyer is not a fraud. The deals on the websites at the present time are subject to change (Hell maybe even for the better, who knows).

One more question, USB ports. What is it that connects the USB ports to the front of the computer, are the USB ports CONNECTED to the motherboard (I dont see how), do I have those selected and chosen as part of my computer already or do i have to buy more things to get that?)

The case should come with the neccessary connector(s). It/they will plug into your mobo. Your mobo should come with a manual identifying the mobo plug-ins.

My suggestions:

Athlon 64 3000+ retail
2x$164=$328
OR
Sempron 3100+
2x$100=$200

Chaintech VNF3-250
2x$71=$142 (better hurry up if you want these, because they're normally $80 or so)

2x512MB pack of Corsair Value Select PC3200
$158/2=$79 per stick (as compared to currently $83 or so)

BFG 6800
2x$250=$500 (if that Outpost deal is still going)

Hitachi SATA 80GB
2x$64=$128 (I don't know what you need here, but these are good drives regardless)

If you like those cases...
2x$148

PSU - included

If those CD drives tickle your fancy, sure
2x$45=$90
although you could skimp on them some

=$1494 without monitor and keyboard (assuming 3000+)
Use that towards a 19" monitor ($200) and a regular combo of keyboard/mouse from Logitech or something ($30), and it comes to $1724. Oh, and adding in XP comes to a nice even $1800. With the remaining money you could upgrade both graphics cards to GTs (an additional $200), or do whatever you want. If you want to blow $100 on keyboards and mice, feel free to do so.

However, I seriously think you should throughoughly prepare yourself for actually building them, because your first time isn't exactly for the faint of heart. Maybe you could spend some time just looking at the inside of your current computer, unplugging and replugging things in, to get some kind of understanding. Hopefully the stock heatsink for the 3000+ uses thermal tape though, because putting thermal grease on there yourself won't be fun for you.

Err yeah, I guess that's it.

I had a question for that..

The heatsink.. I read that tutorial from mechBgon (Nice Tut!, Heatsink 3MB Heatsink Vid Link Dont work). He said that if I messed that up, I would have troble putting the thermal grease on it.. I would need some serious elaborating on that..

1. Is there a way to find out if it is grease/thermal?
2. I need to look at the parts you suggested and do some research.
3. The laptop auction ends wednesday, and I will have the money soon, the parts will not be bought until I know for a FACT the money is in my hand. I have been scammed once before and I am not going all out with parts until I have the money in my pocket.

yes, get that outpost deal for the 6800nu so you can save some money. you can also get the seagate drive either from fry ( 200 gb for 70 after mrb) or bestbuy(160 gb for something with mail in rebate) . Anyway, take a look at the hot deal forum man. it will save you some money then you can use that to upgrade your video card or something else.

That should help you some with mounting the heatsink. Whether or not you're using thermal tape or thermal grease, because the Athlon 64 has a heatspreader, it makes it easier to mount the heatsink. At the very least, you don't have to worry about chipping the core. Another thing to keep in mind there is not to touch the bottom of the heatsink or anyplace on the heatspreader where it will have thermal grease. Doing so will leave dead skin cells on their surfaces, hampering the ability to transfer heat.

http://www.arcticsilver.com/ar...ilver_instructions.htm

will also help. Yes, you could also go for one of those 160GB deals that are $100-$50 MIR = $50, but rebates are no fun. I will second the hot deal forum though, because you can save a lot of money that way. Keep in mind that AMD has also scheduled another set of price cuts for October 15th, I believe.

EDIT: By the way, what's your other old computer like? You may be able to eBay some of the parts. I know I've been wanting to sell my slot a Athlon parts for way more than they're worth.

EDIT 2: I noticed you're selling a very nice Alienware notebook. Are you really getting bad framerates with that? And by the way, if you still have the recovery CD and serial key on the bottom of your notebook, you should still be able to install XP Home on your other two computers without problem, saving you $74. Also make sure to completely reformat the computer before you send it off, so nobody gets any of your data. Unless you're selling your XP key with it, too...

Could I just make a copy of the CD, or is there hidden files I need to worry about? The laptop's framerate AVG is 15fps, on older games like Operation Flashpoint or Battlefield 1942, its been like that over a year (How long I've had it). I will have to read up on those tutorials in a few hours, I got work today.

Nice work on the computers! I am sorry but give me until 4PM CST to read everything fully.

Well, if you're selling the XP CD -and- the key (probably on the bottom of the laptop) with the laptop, you probably shouldn't copy the CD. But if you were just selling it with XP installed, simply keep the CD and key (rip it off or something). Anyway, I still don't see why you're getting 15 FPS on a machine like that. My 1.6GHz P4-m, with 256MB of ram and a Radeon 7500 mobile, can easily play BF1942 and such. Hell, even my old 900MHz Athlon with 256MB of ram, and with a borrowed PCI GF4MX, can -kind of- play BF1942 at the lowest settings. Something is definitely wrong with that computer, so maybe you should consider figuring out why it's playing so slowly. Of course, I'd rather have 2 gaming desktops than 1 gaming laptop anyday, especially since I don't travel any.

Isn't that just taking the data off the CD and putting it into another cd, if so thats what I ment by coping the cd, if thats not what you ment, pp-p-please elaborate! lol, I would really love saving that 70 dollars or so lol

I hate alienware thats all i have to say, when i got the laptop.. I knew it was a mistake from the beginning :D

Oh, I meant physically rip the CD key off of the bottom of the laptop, so nobody else can use it. To my knowledge, XP Home CDs don't have copy protection, so even if you wanted to send the CD, you could keep a copy for yourself. If you didn't advertise you were selling the CD and license key, you may as well keep them and use them on your own computers.

In my opinion, and many others', the nForce3 chipset is superior to the K8T800 chipset. Even then, I'd say it's not worth it unless you need Gigabit LAN. Otherwise, it has practically the same feature set.

You need whichever CD is labeled "Windows XP Home."

I don't see why you want the Geil ram, because it isn't really rated any better than the Corsair ram, and Corsair ram is know to be high quality. Even then, timings are relatively unimportant. You would be better off saving $20 and getting the Corsair.

Again, just keep your OS recovery CD and your CD key, and you should be fine, saving you $74. I also highly recommend a 19" monitor for not much more.

One final thing; if that $70 Maxtor deal with no rebates is still going you should certainly try that out. I personally don't have any experience with current Maxtor drives, but I know my 4 year old 60GB is still going strong.

Would you mind throwing a link for the $70 dollar maxtor deal? If I can save some more money sure!

Whats the difference between Gigabit LAN and normal lan? Me and my brother have 2 copies of a few games and we LAN vs's all the time.. If I save money on the HDD/RAM* I'd go with the ABIT MOBO.

Could you get me the RAM link as well? Thx! u rock

The dual pack is no longer a good deal, because it comes out to $84 a stick. Single packs are now $79 each anyway, so that's practically the same deal. Not to mention you get another free pen. :D

Apparently the Maxtor deal is no longer going. Even then, I hear Maxtors aren't very good anyway. If you don't mind going through the hassles of rebates, you can get a 160GB Hitachi for $50 and a 160GB Seagate for $50.

Gigabit LAN is really only better than 100mbps LAN when you're transferring large, sequential files between computers. Games I imagine do not send large files AT ALL between computers; just a lot of smaller ones. In my opinion, it is definitely not worth $60 for gigabit LAN when the nForce3 250 chipset is better anyway.

Also, don't try to needlessly spend extra money just to spend over $2200. If you have extra money left over, just keep it for something else.
