I need help before I loose my herd of PIII

I need to show in a text or web page what is Seti and what it does/doesn't to the PCs so my manager will not have a problem to let me keep running Seti.

Best regards

And for more info go here to SETI's FAQ

I hope that your managers soon see that SETI is harmless & let you carry on running it..............in fact they should help you assimilate more PC's 😉
Good luck 🙂
keep us posted..........

Thanks Assimilator, but I need something plain and simple, and not too big either (unfortunally she doesn't have the knowledge and the time to go thru that much info).

Ok how about this?

What is SETI@home?

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that harnesses the power of hundreds of thousands of Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. There's a small but captivating possibility that your computer will detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth.

This was lifted from our Hobbit SETI website which in turn had used it from SETI@home themselves

I will try to find a little more 'straightforward stuff'.............

Here's more stuff I've lifted from SETi Berkleys site, linked above (should be relevant)

Sending You the Data

SETI@home connects only when transferring data. This occurs only when the screen saver has finished analyzing the work-unit and wants to send back the results (and get another work-unit.) We'll only do this with your permission and allow you to control when your computer connects to us or, we'll give you the option to set the screen saver to transfer data automatically as soon as it's done with the current work-unit. The data transmission lasts for less than 5 minutes with most common modems and we'll disconnect immediately after all data is transferred.

Looking for more..............

What about security?

The client/screensaver is available for download only from this web page - we do not support SETI@home software obtained elsewhere. This software will upload and download data only from our data server here at Berkeley. The data server doesn't download any executable code to your computer. All in all, the screensaver is much safer than the browser you're running right now!

& more..........

Cool 🙂 ,here's more

Will running SETI@home overload or burn out my CPU?

No. The CPU on most computers is always executing instructions (often the operating system's "idle loop") whenever the computer is turned on. It's no additional strain to execute SETI@home.

These last 2 I got from SETI's FAQ

Does she have any specific questions?

Btw ,if anyone else wants to chip in with more confirmable info then feel free! 😉

No, in reality she is concerning about the pcs slowing down when users are working on them. And how much bandwidt it will use to support the SetiQ and the 30 pcs in a daily basis. She doesn't wants to bog down the connection iether, so I need to explain to her that the WUs are not that big and the up/dl of them is not a big bandwidt eater. I was trying to compare that with regular emails but I don't know if that is a good comaprison. What do you think?

Thanks for all the info so far.

Not that the bandwidth is much to speak of but with recent bandwidth issues internal to Berkeley I would recommend running SetiQ on a single machine. All the internal machines will pull w/u's from that so most network traffic would be limited between that machine and all others. You can then set the setiq machine to connect to the Internet during off hours.

That's how is set up, going to the only pc that is able to connect to the net, but she is asking how big are the WUs, especially when the Q is supporting 30 pcs, so in a week I'm flushing about 200 WUS.

Be sure to include the Corporate Sponsers list, and the Corporate Teams that participate. If SETI was such a big problem, would so many corporate teams exist?

1 WU is 350k ,a result is mostly about 5k or less & is never more than 10k

What spec PIII's have you got?

As a rough guide a PIII 800 on a 133 FSB will do most WU's in about 7hrs or just over
A PIII 550 will do them in about 9.5-10 hrs
