$575 for a Canon Rebel XT w/ lens is a great price. The other comparable DSLR in your range you're looking at is the Nikon D50, which can be had brand new for around that price (including a kit lens as well). I own the D50 myself, and couldn't be happier with it. I prefer it over the Rebel XT mainly because it fits my hands better (the XT is small), but sometimes I miss the more megapixels of the XT because of cropping reasons, although it's not a big deal at all.

I picked the D70 because it felt better than the Rebel XT. I'd suggest going to a store and holding them in your hands. The XT was small and felt like it would slip out of my hands. Alot of people are totally happy with the XTs though. I think Nikon and Canon both make fine cameras.

spacelord is right, you can't go wrong with a Canon or Nikon DSLR. However, if you have a connection who works at Canon, it might be in your best interest to stick with the Rebel XT incase he can help you out with any lenses in the future ;).

I should point out that you can occasionally get a NEW Rebel XT at around that price. Not without some effort, but something like this previous (dead) Hot Deals thread:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=1845653

After reading a bunch of dSLR threads, some people insist on getting the Rebel XT body only because of the inferior kit lens. I can't speak from experience, so I'll let others chime in on that. Maybe a new Rebel XT body and some hook-up with your Canon friend for a nice lens?

Also, Overstock has a refurb Nikon D50 body for $459.99:

Connection? $575 for the XT kit is normal now at Dell and other places. Just go to your local BB and ask to pick each of them up and give them a try for a few minutes.

I've held the D70, D50, 20d, 300d, and 350d(xt) and chose the XT. Just personal preference.
