I Need CPU Cooling Advice

Wow, I haven't been here in seven years. I was a regular in the Hot Deals Forum.

I've built about ten computers. I'm not fond of Intel and use only AMD CPU's. I'm not an overclocker, but thought this the best place for a cooling question. I replaced a bad Biostar mobo with a new Biostar mobo, BIOSTAR M7VIG 400 Socket A. I'm running an Athlon 1.2 gig processor. I've enabled CPU overheat shutdown. It does overheat because it's shutdown several times. I removed the case cover and watched the CPU fan for two weeks, it seems fine. The only thing I can think of is to replace the heatsink and fan with an aftermarket one. I've never chose a heatsink and fan. Some of them look massive and I'm worried about whether they'll fit. I've gotten around this problem by always buying a processor in the retail box, these come with a heatsink and fan.

Newegg.com has become my regular vendor. I'm asking for help picking a heatsink and fan from Newegg that will fit this mobo and give me killer cooling. Thanks.

Uberman, you're about three years late buying a Socket A (socket 462) heatsink. All that newegg and nearly anyone else has left is what nobody else wanted, except for the Thermaltake Volcano 12, which is $33.99 @ newegg. Of course, your processor is only 1.2 Ghz, so it isn't going to be hard to cool. I'd go with one of these two, if I were you: link.

And myocardia is right. A 1.2 GHz Socket A CPU shouldn't be hard to cool. I would choose the second one (mass cools I think it's called) if you got the room.

I used the Vantec AeroFlow C7040 for awhile to cool a Socket A Athlon. One of the first with a Copper slug core IIRC.

The fan is quiet and it worked well for me.

Thank you to all for your advice. Everyone's comments were appreciated. I ended up going for the VANTEC AeroFlow VA4-C7040. There is a reason for that and I believe there's a lesson here. It was described as quiet.

Quiet computers are nice to have. I had a desk in my bedroom with a computer on it 6 feet from where I sleep. I was using Partition Magic to resize the partition on-the-fly, it appeared to have locked up, after two hours of inactivity I shut it off. The noise disrupted my sleep. I lost almost all the data on the hard drive. I would have been better off to let the computer run for four or five days. I don't know if it would've processed correctly, but hopefully I would not have lost my data. That was a learning experience. Thanks again.

The Tuniq Tower still isn't available. These are roughly as good: Scythe Infinity, Scythe Ninja, Zalman 9500 Thermalright Ultra-120.
